Knicks sign Duane Washington, Jr. to 2-way

Post#1 » by HarthorneWingo » Tue Feb 28, 2023 3:14 pm

Some news, per Woj:

“The Knicks are planning to sign guard Duane Washington Jr., on a two-way contract, sources tell ESPN. Washington averaged 7.9 points in nearly 13 minutes for Suns this season.”

From the little I’ve seen of Washington I like him. Seems like a worthy guy to spend a 2-way spot on. Dude put up 17 on us in January last season.

Don't look at his FG guys. Guess he's just the emergency backup anyways.

For the reason you stated - he's a brick artist with bad shot selection.

This is a nothing signing anyway. This guy will never be in a Knick uniform in any meaningful role.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Imagine if social media were around when we signed a guy like John Starks. The hot takes would have been so lame.

Knicks can use a bit more PG depth for insurance reasons.

Fifth string behind Brunson, IQ, Deuce, and DRose.

But if Brunson goes down and D-Rose is toast, Thibs cannot run an offense without a ball-dominant gunner running the show. Deuce isn't that guy, so I can see how/why they'd sign a kid like this. In the event of Brunson injury + DRose being washed, he'd get a legit shot at scoring 20 ppg. Likewise in the event of IQ injury, he'd get a legit shot at replacing a ton of shots off the bench since Deuce seems a bit too gun shy to run the Thibs' downhill isolation offense.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but also, this:

Washington was waived by Phoenix on Feb. 1 when the Suns decided to bring Saben Lee on a two-way deal after his ten-day contracts expired.

At 22, he's a little bit interesting and obviously won't see much, if any playing time.

Westchester is 3 games behind Capital City for the 6th and final playoff spot, 2 games in the Loss column. Washington might be there for the playoff push...

He's a nice bench depth guard, he can shoot it, mostly a 3 point gunner that can pass it some but I doubt he sees the floor for the Knicks unless it's says Westchester on it.

He seems more like a combo guard than a true PG. John Starks type. Can score in bunches, can also brick a lot of shots. Maybe John Starks without the defense.

Knicks recently recalled Keels from Westchester, so they could use another key player there.
