Ben Simmons to the Bulls

Post#1 » by NYG » Sat Apr 8, 2023 5:40 am

Ben Simmons, 21st Overall and 22nd Overall for DeMar DeRozan and Andre Drummond

-The Bulls wouldn't get 2 first rounders from anyone else IMO for DeRozan so by eating the final 2 years of Simmons and hoping he stays healthy in meantime, they maximize their return.

-The Nets turn Simmons into a veteran than can score with the surrounding core in Brooklyn around him complimenting him nicely and Drummond could be useful as well.

There’s a part of me that still thinks Simmons could be great again…he was All-NBA just a few short years ago.

I think both 1sts is a hard no from Brooklyn. One 1st and some future 2nds is possible but I think Brooklyn wants to see if Simmons is able to recover from his back injury.

Of course my assumptions could be wrong, but the new CBA is reportedly lifting all restrictions on the number of Designated Rookie Extension players that a team can have on their roster. This allows Brooklyn to pursue any player that becomes available for trade and eliminates what, in my opinion, was the most compelling reason to send him elsewhere.

Bulls aren't taking a triple threat problem collector, he makes $40M, constant injuries and frankly a head case. Once they move DeRozan they lack scoring, still have no leadership from the PG position and now both hands tied behind their back on the cap. So they are sentencing themselves to an unknown length of rebuild and they lack their 2025 pick to sustain that.

If I'm Brooklyn i'm not rushing to throw assets to dump Ben Simmons - unless it's part of a larger deal and his contract is needed for cap purposes. At this point, his value can't get any lower than it currently is. His contract will be on Brooklyn's books for 4 more trade seasons - offseason 23, trade deadline 24, offseason 24, trade deadline 25 - and it becomes less onerous at each mile marker as the contract gets shorter and shooter. So best case, Simmons get healthy and regains some of his all-NBA level talent. Worst case, the cost to get off the contract lessens.

I don’t know if his value can’t get lower.

People said that Simmons value couldn’t get lower last year, but his inability to show up for the Nets playoffs last year, missing half a season with injuries, and a boost in personal fouls while his FT% got even lower might change their mind.

It’s hard to know what GM’s think, but there are plenty of people on this board who still have hope in Simmons, despite all the evidence of the last two years. Yes, the remaining contract gets lower, but maybe some GM’s still think they might get some starter-level production back. Simmons can still kill that hope with another season like the last two.

Right now his value is negative and the debate is which assets need to be included for a team to absorb the contract. So as the contract gets shorter, it gets less expensive to move.

Yes, I understand. The total dollar cost gets less. But the chance to get future production back for that cost is undetermined. The amount of hope in that future production, based on the player Simmons was three years ago, helps minimize the price a team will need to take on Simmons. And that hope still remains, at least with several on this board.

Right now there isn't an offer on the table where any team is giving up anything of value for Ben Simmons. Teams expect Brooklyn to surrender value to absorb the contract.

BKN eating $38m of Simmons next year has to be worth way more than whatever hope another team might have.

I can't see any world in which another team cuts BKN a better deal because they think Simmons might rehab some of his value. He might be the most deadweight deal in the league right now. Knee + Back + Mental Health + a bad contract (even at his peak) = zero value.

I agree. BRK isn’t going to be able to get any GM to take on his deal without providing some incentive. We aren’t comparing bad and neutral, we’re comparing bad and worse.

But I think that as a free agent destination, turning that contract into 2024 cap space could be incredibly valuable for them. I expect to see BRK use assets to move him at the next trade deadline, but it might be sooner if they expect continued bad play and missed games next year would cause all GM’s to lose hope that Simmons could provide production in the future. You and I are already there, but several posters here still have hope - I wonder if that hope if reflected in actual GM’s, with their careers at stake?

The Bulls' biggest need is a point guard with healthy knees, so I'm not sure of the accuracy of this statement.

The Call of Duty roster would be legit though, Zach Coby and Ben would be unstoppable on the battlefield.
