Bobby Marks: Raptors Off-Season Guide

https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/insider/story/_/id/36092132/offseason-guides-trades-free-agency-draft-every-eliminated-nba-team

State of the roster: Time is up for the Raptors. Unlike the trade deadline, when Toronto kept the current roster intact (it did add Jakob Poeltl), there are now decisions to be made. It starts with the future of Nick Nurse. The Raptors coach told Tim Bontemps in late March that he will "take a few weeks to see where I'm at" when the season ends. Nurse has one year left, and Toronto is faced with the decision to extend a new contract, let him enter 2023-24 as a lame duck coach or go in a different direction. The future of Nurse will determine what direction the front office takes with the roster. There are contractual decisions with their top six players, outside of Scottie Barnes. Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr. have player options and are likely to become free agents in July. They will join Poeltl, who is an unrestricted free agent. Pascal Siakam and O.G. Anunoby are extension eligible and can become free agents in 2024. If Toronto keeps all five players then extends Barnes next offseason, total salaries could exceed $170 million in 2025-26. The lineup of VanVleet, Barnes, Anunoby, Siakam and Poeltl averaged 18.8 minutes together and outscored opponents by 63 points.

Offseason finances: Including the player options of VanVleet, Trent, Otto Porter Jr. and their first-round pick, the Raptors enter the offseason with $150 million committed next year, some $12 million below the tax threshold. VanVleet has until June 15 to opt in to his contract, Porter has until June 20 and Trent has until June 29. If those three players and Poeltl return, Toronto will likely be a tax team in 2023-24. The Raptors do have flexibility with the non-guaranteed contracts of Thaddeus Young ($8 million) and Joe Wieskamp ($1.9 million). Both contracts become guaranteed on June 30. If VanVleet and Trent do not return, the Raptors are still technically at the cap because of the $17.8 million free agent hold of Poeltl.

Top front-office priority: Besides clarity at head coach, it starts with VanVleet. The former All-Star tabled discussions this year on a four-year, $114 million extension that would have paid him a $25.5 million salary in 2023-24. The extension is $10 million less than what Jalen Brunson signed for in New York last season. VanVleet has averaged the second-most minutes in the league over the past three seasons (only behind Siakam) and leads the NBA in miles covered per game over three seasons, per Second Spectrum. Considering that Toronto sent a lightly protected 2024 first-round pick to acquire him, Poeltl is a priority this offseason. His next contract should range from $15 million per season (Jusuf Nurkic) to as high as $20 million (Jarrett Allen).

It's going to be a weird off-season where we will basically be hoping teams will bail us out like the Heat did with Lowry or we will all try to convince ourselves that we are just retaining assets only to trade them while never likely trading them. With all the drama that was going on behind the scenes, I really don't understand how Toronto so confidently kept EVERYONE knowing we would still be a tax team even if it all magically "worked out" and we basically made the playoffs.

Please just get Fred off this team.

Try to sell high on Pascal.

Build around Barnes/OG/Poeltl.
In Masai We Trust :meditate:

Fully expecting a late night edit to the piece to include "find good quality cheap price earplug whole seller from China."

My off-season guide:

- Trade Pascal for 4-5 FRPs
- Trade OG for 2-3 FRPs
- Let Fred and GTJ walk
- Hope we're bad enough to end up with a top-6 pick next year

Masai's inevitable off-season strategy:

- Sign Fred to a $200 million extension
- Draft another 6'7"+ guy who can't shoot
- Let GTJ walk so our shooting gets even worse (who needs shooters?)
- Maybe trade our 2025 FRP for another Thad
- End up with the 7th pick in the 2024 draft

If masai has a plan, I don't think it's going accordingly... it's time for big changes, I hope we see them

Would be an expensive team to keep together.

But if they did retain everyone, gave Nurse a new extension and extended both Siakam and OG next year, could this roster be at least top 6 in the EC?

Did they play a lot better, maybe 48 or more win rate, after they acquired Poetl!

Depending on the playoffs and what the top 3 EC teams do in the off-season, can this roster potentially compete against any EC team next year and beyond?

It’s easy to say blow it up but key players are going to turn 30. How many years to turn over a roster and become a top EC contender!

Celtics still have a young core but maybe Brown leaves.

Giannis is under 30 but Lopez had a massive year at age 35 and is a UFA for a small market team.

Embid is MVP level but does he stay if 76ers still can’t at least reach the ECF?. Harden may be injured and may bail.

So Raptors may be able to compete but some other team may rise, Cavs, maybe even Orlando. They could trade away asset but for what? Even if OG fetched 3 or 4 FRPs, how many years will Raptors fans wait for them?

Could be even tougher if FVV walks away for nothing or even GTR leaves without return for Raptors, a team in big need of outside shooting.

I'll have faith in MU.
I don't expect a tank. At most I expect moves around the margins.

I'd say you keep GTJ/OG/Scottie/Poeltl. That line up gives you defense, mobility, and if Scottie can improve his outside range a bit, enough shooting to compliment a PG who can light it up to come in. FVV and Siakam at this point need to leave from the old guard as not only can they not fill the roles they've been put in, but these reports of the locker room not being where it needs to be stems from them. Whether they're the problem or not, they are the teams de-facto leaders as far as the player side goes. If your "culture" guys aren't able to pull everyone together, then what's the point?

I'm expecting a fairly sizable return for Siakam which would be good. FVV S&T can hopefully at least net us some young player for depth.

4/110M is Marks’ number for FVV’s contract. Hmm would you bring Freddy back at that number?

I wouldn't bring him back even at 4/60 unless he was willing to accept a bench role.

What does this even mean when people say this nonsense?

Build around Chris Boucher while we’re here throwing names around.

we need a shooting guard, badly; GTJ isn't going to get it done; i think next season we may see more of Flynn if NN isn't here; its quiet pathetic how he has been underutilized & not developed under the Raptors.

What shocking is this?! till 2022, the Raptors were known as a great developing talent team, past 2 years we have moved away from that philosophy, time to get back to the drawing board & address the problems...being in the lottery is the best thing for us
