The Boston Celtics are set to hire Charles Lee as their lead assistant coach. Lee will join Joe Mazzulla's staff, as Boston remakes their assistant coach ranks.

Lee was the associate head coach for the Milwaukee Bucks this past season. He's interviewed for several head coaching positions over the last few years, while coaching under Mike Budenholzer. In addition to coaching in Milwaukee, Lee was an assistant for the Atlanta Hawks.

Boston has also hired Sam Cassell as an assistant coach this summer. The Celtics are looking to add experience to Mazzulla's staff, as he enters his second season as the team's head coach.

I think hiring all these highly qualified and experienced head coaches is a bad idea for the Celtics. They’re all going to undercut each other and try to get the head coach fired.

What a ridiculous take. As if you have any insight into their decision-making.

What gives you the impression that these aren’t Joe’s picks?

Brad is grooming Joe, like Pat groomed Spo. The Celtics already regard him as a better coach than Ime, who got a bit overrated after 2022 and really had a great staff (like Will and Damon).

Joe couldn’t pick his staff earlier when he got the role in training camp. This is Joe now building his own staff from the ground up, to complement his strengths and weaknesses. It’s no different than Brad bringing on Ron Adams in 2013.

These are experienced hires to support Joe and his growth. Brad is invested in Joe. Now Joe has two championship winners as sounding boards

I think Stoudemire leaving in late March right on the verge of the playoffs hurt their coaching
