The greatest players in the world: Dennis Schroder and Dillon Brooks!

Post#1 » by penbeast0 » Sun Sep 10, 2023 5:17 pm

2023 FIBA World Cup just finished. Dennis the Menace won MVP leading Germany over Serbia to the title. Dillon Brooks outplayed Anthony Edwards and Mikal Bridges, going 7 for 8 from 3 to lead Canada over the USA for 3rd place.

Let us hope they can enjoy their moment in the sun.

OR maybe Aleksa Avramovic since Serbia beat Canada in the semis.

Didn't see the tournament so all I generally get are high scorers but wanted to throw it up because Schroder and Brooks don't generally get a lot of NBA love.

I watched the 2nd half/OT of the USA/Canada game. The finish of regulation was absolutely bonkers. Went something like this.......

Tie game with <1 minute remaining, Canada has the ball. Shai wants to iso against Mikal, and sticks a mid-range jumper right in his face (kind of a bad shot/play, really, but it went in). Canada up by two.
Can't remember who shot the ball for USA, but it misses and Dillon Brooks got the rebound and gets fouled. Makes a couple FT's, Canada up by 4 with something like ~20 seconds left now.

USA takes way too long getting something going, and the shot is finally Austin Reaves driving baseline against Brooks, pulling up for a baseline jumper........which Brooks blocks right back in his face. Reaves recovers and fires up another baseline jumper. It misses and Mikal Bridges gets the weakside rebound, and gets fouled trying to put it back. There are 4.2 seconds left.

Bridges ices the first FT [3 point game], bringing up the question of what you do next: try to make the second and then foul? Or miss on purpose and try to get a trey?

Well, he opts to miss, throwing up a kinda flat, hard shot that clangs off the back iron. And Dillon Brooks, who'd been everywhere, having a superstar game, botches an assignment: plowing toward the hoop instead of boxing out the shooter. Consequently, NO ONE boxed out Bridges, allowing him to snatch his own miss, after which he sprints with it to the right corner, and tosses up a turnaround fling from behind the arc........AND IT GOES IN!

Game is tied with 0.6 seconds left.
Canada calls time-out and gets to inbound at half-court; Kelly Olynyk actually gets a fairly decent look from about 28' which almost goes in (just of the back of the rim). So it goes to overtime, and seemed like things were in USA's favour: they have momentum, Canada's gotta be feeling like "what the hell just happened?"
But Canada came out strong in the extra period and pretty well dominated the OT (I think they won by like 9 or something).

That end of regulation, though......crazy. When Bridges hit that three, my wife and son heard me shout "OH my gosh!!" from the basement.

Cool stuff. Go Canada, savour the flavour.

Here, you can watch the missed FT, OReb, and trey for yourself (starts at ~0:57 in video):

That's the moment you established yourself as a true Canadian.

My "Class 'Eh'" personality is showing through?

On a side-note, how good do we think this Canada team does in the NBA for a full season?:

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Dillon Brooks
Dwight Powell
Lu Dort
Kelly Olynyk
RJ Barrett
Nickeil Alexander-Walker
(then a few scrubs)

Don't you mean Shai and a few MORE scrubs? Doubt it's a playoff team with that front line.
