Kinda odd, IMO. Granted, he hasn't shown much in his career yet, but why lock yourself into being one of the lower-paid veterans in the league right as an opportunity to earn more minutes is presenting itself?

If you are a fringe player trying to hold on in the league and 13m gets put in front of you…easy choice IMO.
If he takes off he can get more next time but never turn down generational money if you don’t already have generational money.

Good for Deuce, even if he doesn't make it he'll be set. Like it for us too cause the kid's defense makes an impact already and he has some PG instincts. If his shot becomes passable enough for teams to respect him he could be a good rotation regular. For now ideally more of a 10th/11th man.

Brunson: So what are you paid to do?
Hart: Run around like an idiot during the game and f*** s*** up!

Knicks continue on the path to being an expensive treadmill team.
No disrespect to McBride - but he was so effective when he got consistent playing time last year that the team needed to give up a 1st rd pick and the give a bench player $72mm to replace him.
Outside of Brunson, no value contracts on the roster. Outside of Grimes no rookie scale players in the rotation.
The Knicks are under tremendous pressure to make a big move between now and next years trade deadline, because once the Brunson max extension kicks in roster flexibility is gone.

The biggest winner of the Quickley trade.

This signing stuck in my brain at the time as being about as cheap as a player with some promise can get, and I'm wondering whether folks still believe he made the right move. Has he shown enough to have merited a much more lucrative extension, if only he'd made that bet on himself?

Nope. Take the money. Go from there.

If I had been in his shoes, I would have done the same, for sure. I just assumed most athletes would make the bet on themselves when the situation seemed to be ripe for exactly the sort of leap in productivity he's made.

Is it 4 or 13 per year?

4M per - guy is looking like one of the, if not the, best value contracts in the league.
Great move on NYK to snag him cheap before he got consistent minutes.

Yeah, it is a rookie level contract, no idea why people are rolling their eyes here.

So, I get where you are coming from, but here are some key points as to why McBride took the money.
1) Quentin Grimes
Why is this relevant?
Grimes went from starting 66 games as a 2nd year role player to falling off a cliff.
2) Guaranteed Money
Dude has made 4.3 Million Pre-Tax in his career. That's likely around 2.5 Million while living in New York. That isn't remotely close to generational money. $13 Million is much closer to Generational Money and this deal ends as he is entering/in the beginning of his Prime at 26/27 years old.
3) How much more money was he getting in the off-season?
Would someone throw the TMLE at him? What if he has a rough post-season for an injury riddled Knicks team?
He was never an MLE level player. He doesn't have a high ceiling. He is a decent bench piece starting on an injury riddled team.
