If this was asked 3 years ago I'd still say SGA for the future.

Shai would have to be a notable playoff dropper for him and Tatum to be a discussion considering Tatum's baseline offense.

For one, Tatum doesn't have the general scoring profile you want from a #1 on a championship. Only about 25 pts per 75 on around league average efficiency. You look at all the #1 offensive options to have won a title, and that is unimpressive on a lower side in the modern times, especially this modern era of space and pace. Seriously, just look at #1 option scoring numbers since 2015, and tell me what players have have had his scoring profile and won it all.

It would also help if Tatum attacked the rim more because he is pretty good at it although I'm not sure "a lot more," is in his personality

For Tatum to really have an argument here, I would like his defensive value to be around an elite, top 8 defensive big territory. Instead, I think Tatum has shown to be an elite defender, all-nba level worthy, but nothing indicates he is really anchoring a top defense like those bigs do. For reference, we would be asking for his defense to be on the level of Pippen with a high-end view of how Pippen's defense. I do not think Tatum is quite that guy.

I do think Tatum could maybe be a better pure passer than SGA, as he might have more foresight when seeking out passes. However, I'm not sure his true playmaking value could be argued to be absolutely higher than SGA because SGA is so relentless attacking the rim. SGA has a type of scoring gravity that affords him the ability to get so many kickouts. Teams have to send him in a way they don't have to either Tatum.

At least this season , SGA looks like a better playmaker, albeit he does have a higher offensive load.

Via PlayVal as Backpicks shows them this morning, there is a distinct gap between them.

SGA: 1.7
Tatum: 0.6

Another underrated point is that SGA takes a lot better care of the ball.

cTOV% is creation-adjusted turnover rate, or turnovers committed as a percentage of offensive load.

Via Backpicks site of this morning, his cTOV% of 5% is incredibly low and reminiscent of Jordan in terms of great scorers with incredible turnover economy. Tatum is at about 9%, which is a bit on the higher side. SGA gives you extra possessions because of his tight ball-handling and more straightforward passing that is him getting cleanly by his guy and hitting an open man versus Tatum's approach.

Tatum's ideal parable would culminate with him being as good as 2016-2019 Kawhi but he looks like a nerfed version of KL and physical tools are not there. Yeah the only way for Tatum is to enhance his playmaking.

I imagine he could focus a little on shooting less from 3 and leveraging other scoring strengths, as well.

Kawhi was also a shutdown defender who always guarded opposing team's best player while consistantly dropping 25+ points.

Not to mention he also could singlehandedly took over Playoff series by himself.
