2024 Free Agent Class - Masai dropped a hint that we might pursue ex-Raptors in free agency, DeMar & Kyle?

Post#1 » by Purple+Black » Mon Jan 22, 2024 6:23 am

Say what you want about his relationship management — we know Masai has the personal relationships to ensure that past Raps would seriously consider his offers (he also has the chops to rebuild relationships that had bittered in the past).

I’m sure everyone watched the press conference, there was a segment where Masai was asked whether he valued the added flexibility in free agency or something along those lines, to which it was added that 5 of the top free agents are ex-Raptors.

This could mean nothing, but it could also be a signal that we intend to pursue previous Raptors in FA.

I’ll cut to the chase, according to Chat GPT the traded player exception (not allowing you to resign a player you traded) lasts 60 days — that would mean that technically we could be players in the OG sweepstakes. OG is the free agent that stands out to me the most and the fact that we traded him to NYK amidst the other issues the two teams are involved in definitely seems a little interesting.

Anyone with a deeper understanding of the CBA know whether we can indeed pursue OG? If we offer him close to a max contract and he agrees, he would be the perfect piece to add back to this team.

Kyle will also be expiring, so if we trade Dennis by the deadline and bring him back as a backup PG it would be the ultimate culture resetting move.

Then there’s also DeMar in the mix and DeMar has been asked in the past about a reunion with Kyle in Toronto — to which he answered that he would be open to it and thought about it in the past, but that this was currently Pascal/Fred’s team and that he’d only see himself going back if Pascal and Fred were no longer there.

Immanuel Quickley/Kyle Lowry/Kira
RJ Barrett/Gradey Dick
DeMar DeRozan
Scottie Barnes
Poeltl

With 3, maybe 4 draft picks this year…

That’s a young team with serious mentorship that I would consider very promising moving forward. Would also be the perfect vet roles for DeMar and Kyle as they near the ending of their careers. Not to mention, what’s a better sending off for DeMar than a return and retirement as a Toronto Raptor.

Not trying to make emotional appeals here or pull at heartstrings, just trying to discuss a path forward that the FO might be considering. There are many ways to answer a question about the value of upcoming free agency class and Masai chose to highlight ex-Raptors.

I mean ya’ll know Masai and full long-term rebuilds, he’s allergic to them - this might be unlikely but it’s not impossible.

If it happened, I don’t think too many fans would be upset and the story would overshadow most critics.

OMG, this would be the greatest thing EVER!!!

Trade Bruce, Schroder, Boucher and Trent for draft picks.

Sign Lowry, Derozan, JV and Delon Wright!!!

PG IQ - Lowry/Delon
SG Derozan - Delon - 1st pick
SF Barrett - Dick
PF Barnes - Johntay - 1st pick
C Poeltl - JV - Johntay

Kyle I can see coming back as a backup point guard + vet leadership/mentor player. JV is a possibility through trade. Demar I don’t think can happen anymore and there’s no need because we got RJ.

BUT.. a line up of IQ, Demar, RJ, Scottie, JV would be so dope. That’s so much offence. No defence tho

I wouldn't mind Lowry back so he can retire a Raptor and impart some wisdom to Quickley on how to play like a championship calibre PG.

I love OG but still do not want to pay him what he is going to get in FA

This is getting more annoying than the "Should we trade for Vince Carter?" threads before he retired. Everyone has moved on except for you lot. These former players are not coming back. Think about it from Masai's perspective: it was hard for him to move on from these guys; he doesn't want to put himself in a position where he inevitably needs to move on from them again.

OG: Resigning with the Knicks
Pascal: Resigning with the Pacers
Kyle: Will join a contender to go for another ring
DeMar: A bit of a wild card. Who Knows

Executives just to throw words at people and claim them. I wouldn't believe the so call "hint".

We are pretty much tanking the next 5 years or so, and the salary is best to acquire bad contracts (2 years) for assets.

Kyle I can see happening. But even now he's a starter so that's iffy. DD is still averaging 22 ppg so doubt he comes. OG not happening.
Fun fact about DD his 2p% dropped under .500 first time in 5 years. He just had 4 years of above .500 shooting. Kobe managed one season of shooting over .500.

Lowry is even more into golf than he was before. Check out his side hustle. IF he continues playing, it will be somewhere he can golf during homestands/off days. He won't play for Toronto again IMO.

A Lowry reunion is possible I think because he's an expiring salary filler for the Heat who doesn't seem like a piece contenders value anymore, so there could be multiple pathways for him to end up back on the Raptors at some point, some of them even before 2024 FA. Plus Masai would probably value having his vet presence around for the rebuild.

DeMar no shot because his playstyle doesn't fit what this rebuild needs.
