CLE/SAC (needs help)

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Wed Jun 26, 2024 1:53 am

Fox/Barnes

for

Garland/Allen/6M filler - picks?

Kings get a solid rim defender next to Sabonis.

Cavs get a guard upgrade and resolve the Allen/Mobley fit issues.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Sabonis was unlocked when you no longer had another 7 footer clogging his space (even though said 7 footer could shoot some threes). Allen is not the answer here. In any case, defensively you want a more versatile defender to play the Aaron Gordon role rather than a pure rim protector

I really like a Sabonis/Mobley frontcourt

Leaves Cavs to thin upfront. And Fox is a ball dominate undersized guard just like Garland would leave to same issues

Fox doesn’t fit with Mitchell. This is a bad deal for the Cavs.

You want Cavs to add picks for this swap, while getting SIGNIFICANTLY older, thus further shrinking their window? There's a gap between Fox and Garland, I'll give you (also a 2 year age gap), but the gap between 26 year old JA and 32 year old Barnes is appreciably larger, IMO. Also, doesnt really solve the Cavs defensive issues in the backcourt, while there is only 1 ball to shoot between Fox and Mitchell. At which point Mobley should resign himself to never seeing the ball aside from rebounds and on the defensive end, and ask out before he has his development and career earnings stunted further by others. I'm CERTAINLY not adding "picks" from the Cleveland side, personally...

You can’t play sabonis and Allen together. Not in today’s NBA.

CLE is moving bodies because their roster construction is atrocious. Swapping Garland for Fox doesn't improve that, I think it's actually worse as Fox and Mitchell are pretty much the same guy. Allen and Sabonis don't really work together either, we saw evidence of that when Sabonis was in IND.

It appears CLE's whole purpose in life is to make Mitchell look like a superstar. That means they need to play 5-out (hence Atkinson) because Mitchell is too small to be effective if the paint is clogged. I'd expect every deal they make to be exclusively about increasing their ability to spread the floor. Barnes does that here, but Fox doesn't - and he's far to ball dominant to put next to Mitchell.

This is really bad for the Cavs. Value, fit, etc.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.
