Warriors, Kings, Spurs Have Made Significant Offers For Lauri Markkanen

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jul 4, 2024 12:33 pm

The Utah Jazz have received significant trade offers for Lauri Markkanen this offseason. The three teams with the most interest to date are the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs.

The Warriors are retooling their roster around the departures of Klay Thompson and Chris Paul this offseason. The Kings have been aggressive in looking to upgrade their roster to make another playoff push. The Spurs have cap flexibility and are adding veterans to a young team headlined by Victor Wembanyama.

Utah has sent signals that they'll need to be blown away in an offer to trade Markkanen. The Jazz know they aren't likely to get top-end young talent from any of their suitors, so they'll be seeking a trade package that comes with significant draft capital in return. Utah is open to being near the bottom of the standings with talent-rich drafts coming in both 2025 and 2026.

Lauri Markkanen has one year left on his contract for just over $18 million. He's extension-eligible, but a team acquiring him may not be able to give him a big enough deal, even under the expanded veteran extension rules.

Ainge won’t accept anything less than six FRPs and matching salary, meaning serviceable players.

So if the offers are not likely to have a young player of interest but is focused on draft pick packages, who can offer the best?

WARRIORS: owns 7 1st, 3 2nd
1st round picks that are tradable: Warriors 2025, Warriors 2026, Hawks 2026, Warriors 2027, Warriors 2028, Warriors 2029, Warriors 2031
2nd round picks that are tradable: Hawks 2028, Warriors 2029, Warriors 2031

KINGS: owns 4 1st, 6 2nd
1st round picks that are tradable: Kings 2028, Kings 2029, Kings 2030, Kings 2031
2nd round picks that are tradable: Kings 2025, Trail Blazers 2025, Kings, 2028, Kings 2029, Kings 2031

SPURS: owns 11 1st, 18 2nd
1st round picks that are tradable: Spurs 2025, Hawks 2025, Hornets 2025 (top 14 protected), Bulls 2025 (top 10 protected), Spurs/Hawks swap 2026, Hawks 2027, Spurs/Celtics swap 2028, Spurs 2029, Spurs/Mavericks swap 2030, Spurs 2031
2nd round picks that are tradable: Spurs 2025, Bulls 2025, Hornets 2025, 3 conditional 2026, Jazz 2026, Conditional 2027, Spurs 2028, Nuggets 2028 (protected 31-33), Timberwolves 2028, Pelicans 2028, Spurs 2029, Clippers 2029, Hornets 2029, Spurs 2030, Cavaliers 2030, Spurs 2031

Are the Hawks picks that the Spurs hold the most valuable picks listed here? Could they get those in a Markkanen deal? There seems to be lots of picks--especially owned by the Spurs--but conditions/protections and the contending teams' own picks don't make this too mouthwatering.

Lauri is a nice player but to acquire him, one will have to deal with Danny Ainge and that is a situation that is probably best to avoid.

Take the Bridges deal and add a younger serviceable player as the start point. Might need an extra swap or two.

Warriors only have thier own frps. They have a 2nd round pick of Atlanta's also they can only trade 4 and do swaps they could trade who they picked in the 2024 draft though as well. Jazz will make a trade eventually i am sure they want kuminga 4 1sts the 2024 pick and pick swaps probably moody as well.
