Kevin Knox draft ?

Post#1 » by Jonathan2347 » Fri Jul 5, 2024 5:27 am

Ok, just wondering why did we pick Knox in this draft ?

Mikal bridges
A. Simmons
Donte
SGA

All selected after. What was the logic ??

Maybe someone here remembers all the details. My memory doesn't work that well, but CBS sports gave the Knicks a better grade for taking Knox than they gave Phoenix for taking Bridges, or The Clips for taking SGA.

Drafts are hard. I know that some people get it right some of the time, but I still say that drafting well is hard. It's 2 parts luck, one part skill.

In hindsight . . . how could they have been so stupid, but at the time . . . it's much harder.

Didn’t Knox outplay Bridges in a 1 on 1 workout or something like that. That changed things a bit.
Knicks loved Bridges I heard but someone w/in the org was high on Knox. (Hope they are gone.)

I love stories like that.

I remember when Kwame Brown outplayed Tyson Chander in practice. Michael Jordan was very impressed with the young kid.

Not really sure. I knew he was trash after watching a few YouTube clips.

We had coach Cal very close to our scouting department (remember for a while we were collecting Kentucky Wildcats, not Nova ones.)
Cal insisted that Knox was a bit raw, but had immense talent/upside.
SGA - no one really saw him coming like this obviously.
Bridges - all comps to role players. He really still is that guy, but obviously a high end role player.
I think I wanted the wife beater (pre-criminal acts obviously) because he seemed like a more explosive athlete and IMO had star-potential moreso than role player.

Knox being a long-limbed gifted offensive talent was looked at as a similar gamble to Porzingis. Also FWIW Knox had a good rookie year. He always has been a bucket.

They would say weird stuff like he doesn't even have underarm hair yet implying he's going to physically mature into an actual NBA player. Looking back it was probably just a genetic condition cause he didn't turn into anything lol. For me the lack of motor was apparent from the start, no intangibles.

He would be the new Kevin Durant...

He was very pumped at the time. He had a promising Summer League. Then, he never recovered from the reality check when he entered the NBA.

here was the rumors, in rough order

1/ that he had no motor
2/ cal said that his shooting was rare
3/ he was rumored to have had great 1on1 workout vs mikal
4/ our coach said that wings and position less were very important.
5/ ppl said mikal had a ceiling bc he was coming out as a senior and was "old" relative to his peers

then we drafted him.

ironically, it was the 76ers that drafted mikal and traded him too. kinda funny how every team that traded mikal has basically regretted it.

We hired the wrong FO for the 2017-2018 season. A bunch of dudes who wanted to prioritize "winning culture" but didn't know how to win themselves and then couldn't evaluate the roster for their life. These type of guys are the worst. That was right after we let go of Phil Jackson after we let him make the Frank pick.

First move they made was to re-sign and overpay THJ and then keep a lame duck coach, Hornacek, who everyone knew was useless. We went .500 for a while and when KP got hurt, the whole roster fell apart because it was trash. No tank required to get the Kevin Knox pick...just pure incompetency and allowing a bunch of bums on short-term contracts to ruin our future. We later had to salary dump both THJ and Courtney Lee in a KP deal. Lol I think we still had Rambis on our staff lmao. We also have a bunch of guys on our roster who are good enough to beat scrub teams but not good enough to win against anyone else (Enes Kanter, Kyle O Quinn, THJ) -- those guys were the most infuriating players to watch. You could always count on KOQ to get 20-10 only against the Magic in a revenge game. Kanter could always score 30 points on teams, but only the mediocre teams and above could make him pay for it by scoring 50 on him. You all saw THJ choke in the playoffs...that's basically the man in big spots.

So basically, by draft time, there's a few facts that are clear. Hornacek is not the answer...bring in Fizdale. There's no one on the roster that is good except KP. Knicks already have a 3&D guy in Frank supposedly. Because the FO effed up on their evaluation of the roster and gave Hornacek a chance, they missed on their chance to get a higher pick and lose out for a whole season. Guess they wanted to take a swing on a kid who had a low motor, didn't play defense, didn't really take threes.

The saddest part is that there were rumors the FO had targeted Trae Young, who would have been a fine pick, even if we hate his guts now. If they had tanked...ah well, bad execs who overestimate how good they are. Good riddance. The rumors for our pick at the time was Mikal, who is not a bad choice either.

I remember being adamant that we needed to tank for Luca, that I like Porter Jr but the injury concerns made him too much of a risk, and that looking at Mikal’s stats on tankathon and being like “wow”. It’s been what 6 years later and his stats and advanced stats still blows most players away.

Correct.

He apparently dominated Miles Bridges in a workout and Fiz said that's all he needed to see.
