Gareth Southgate Steps Down As England Manager

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Jul 16, 2024 3:34 pm

Gareth Southgate has announced he is stepping down as manager of England after eight seasons in the job. The Football Association had hoped to sign him to an extension.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” Southgate said. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”

Under Southgate, England reached the European Championship in 2021 and 2024, as well as the World Cup semifinal in 2018. In the 2022 World Cup, England were eliminated in the quarterfinals by France.

Newcastle’s Eddie Howe and three former Chelsea managers, Graham Potter, Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino, are near the top of the FA’s shortlistto succeed Southgate.
