Dereck Lively talks about shooting threes

Apparently Lively said this summer that he wants to work on his offense in the paint before focusing more on the perimeter.

This is good to hear, though. If Lively starts and he's willing to shoot the three that could improve Dallas' spacing.

Hes been shooting 3s in highschool and took several in college, so its not unheard of, but yes, he hasn't shown much of even mid range yet. Guys like Ibaka or Horford were midrange kings before shooting any 3s, but now, you probably do not want any big to shoot long 2s.

If Lively starts and he is able to make defenses respect his ability to shoot the three then the Mavs offense could be ridiculous (if they're healthy).

No doubt, but I doubt he is anywhere close to respected shooter, they will leave him wide open, but we will see.

Lively showed a huge improved from 3point shot to 3point shot this season. He started out air-balling his first 3 pointer, then he hit the rim and the last 3 pointer he took was in the finals and made it. Thats called progress!
(Here is all the shots)

Anyway, if he can develop a shoot and shoot 37% or similar on decent clip that will be huge for him as far as future contract.

Lively doesn't have good shooting touch. 50% from the line. He shot 2-13 on threes in college.

I'm sure he's banging a ton of threes in practice, and that he's physically capable of shooting them. He's Dallas' rim runner, so I don't see there being many scenarios where a Dereck Lively three-point shot is an outcome Dallas is happy with. He's going to have to make a ton before anyone starts closing out on him.

If he becomes a viable 3-point shooter, good for him. I just don't think there's any reaction necessary when we hear about "adding a 3-point shot" in the offseason. Every NBA player is trying to improve their shooting.

I'd be shocked if he shoots above 35%, it's rare for a FT shooter as bad as he is to be a good 3pt shooter.

I imagine the idea is for him would be to have a shooting trajectory similar to Demarcus Cousins who shot below 20% from 3 all throughout college and the first 5 or so years as a pro, but then became an above average shooter that you couldnt leave alone anywhere. Obviously easier said than done, but I am all for him looking to expand his range early on.

Dereck LIvely, lively who averages 0.0 something three point attempts per game, and who has never made an in game regular season three point shot, responds "of course I'm going to shoot all the threes I possibly can, I'm super eager to jack up some three point shots, this is 2024 it's all about the three bro" as if the posed question could not be any more absurd. The level of ignorance coming from the media simply astounds Dereck Lively.

I’m not saying Lively can’t get there as a 3pt shooter but the odds have to be incredibly low. Down to a man, pretty much every C who is a respectable 3pt shooter was either a good FT shooter in college/Europe or was actually attempting 3’s in college/Europe. And some of those guys came up in an era where centers shooting 3’s was not en vogue so they likely had much more room to grow as a shooter because they never did it before (ex. Brook Lopez)

How many 3pt shooting C’s were both bad free throws shooters AND never took 3’s before they entered the league? I can’t think of a single one who became respectable from 3.

But Demarcus was a decent ft line shooter. So was Brooke Lopez, Channing Frye etc. They just developed their range, while Lively must first of all develop a shot.

It would open up some lineup possibilties where they can go twin tower with Gafford/Lively. Their back up 4 is the biggest weakness on the team right now so it would help if Lively could steal some minutes there.

Doubt that he transformed himself into an actual respectable NBA 3 point threat over a single offseason though

Free throw shooting isnt a good indicator of 3 point shooting. Bruce Bowen is the prime example of this.

fortunately, most of the time the game will feel like "i gotta let luka and kyrie shoot 3's"

It is for big men, but who else was a bad free throw shooter and a good 3-point shooter?

It's a long road to becoming a legit stretch five. But if he could become decent at the 3p with his ability finish at the rim, that would be serious upgrade for the Mavs for real. Make teams guess... are we pick and rolling or pick and popping. Add another wrinkle to Luka's already ridiculous two-man game. Why not?

It is widely accepted by scouts that FT% is the best long term indicator of shooting touch for 3-pointers. Bruce Bowen is a very strange case and maybe the only example? Bowen became a specialist at one very specific kind of shot. Corner threes. He's a weird anomaly.

I think the Mavs would be over the moon if Lively can simply up his free throws. You're going to want him always around the rim, applying pressure. If he expands his game, great! Him talking about it in the offseason means nothing.

Wonder what would happen if the NBA made a 4 point shot, anything after half court worth 4points?
