Lottery protected first for Josh Minott?
So Josh Minott was the 45th pick in the 22 draft. He did not start or play that much in college. We spent the first two years of his 4 year (Hinkie special contract,) mostly in the G. So far he is standing out in the preseason for improved shooting, solid rebounding, and defending 2-4. On the Wolves he is buried behind a solid 8 man rotation and 2 first round draft picks (not to mention Joe Ingles who was promised minutes.) But I do believe Minott is a solid 8th man with significant upside and could even become a 6th man with play time and the right coach. Any team willing to take a flier on a 21 soon to be 22 year old below minimum deal? Player for pick straight up, no cash or salary back.

I don't think you can expect anyone to invest a first, even if it's lotto protected, on a guy like Minott who hasn't proven anything in the regular season.
You could maybe get a couple seconds for him, but I think he provides more value for the Wolves than that, providing depth
this year and specifically next year when the roster will have potentially more question marks

Rebuilding team rather keep/spend the 1st on a rookie with 2 more years of control
Contending team rather spend the 1st on a proven player to help them

Not sure who would give up anything but a late FRP at best for Minott.

Why would anyone give a FRP for Minott? He hasn't done anything in the league to remotely be worth that.

I edited the question after all the valid responses. Would a mid season trade change the equation at all? Especially if he is the 9th man in a successful rotation. What would you need to see for him to be worth it?

To trade a first I'd have to think he could start in the near future.

Re: Lottery protected first for Josh Minott?
I think Minott is going to end up being the 9th guy in the Wolves rotation, maybe even to start the season. I don't see him having 1st round value at this point and trading him for a 2nd or two seems like a bad idea.

Re: Lottery protected first for Josh Minott?
You could get an unprotected 2nd for him. Cant get a first.
He is not a rotation player even if you think he has the skills to be one.
If he earns minutes and plays well enough that he looks like he has starter potential then maybe you could get 2 seconds.

If he’s the 9th man in the rotation , wouldn’t the wolves be better off keeping him and seeing how much more he can contribute ? He’s still cost controlled with upside .

9th men aren't worth first rounders. Typically, they aren't even worth second rounders. Nobody is giving up anything of value until he shows he can average more than 1ppg in garbage minutes.

I understand the skepticism, and I agree with the crowd that he can’t draw a protected 1st right now. But let me tell you some local information why Wolves fans are so optimistic.
Even before pre-season, there has been no Wolves player that got as much hype from Connelly and Finch as Minott. They couldn’t stop gushing about how much improvement he had made this summer. I was suspicious of some type of GM con job to try to raise his trade value, even though both of them have a history of going in the opposite direction. But apparently this was true. Local reporters who’ve watched him in the gym have been so struck by his improved shooting that they focused a lot of questions on it. Minott says that besides the improved mechanics, he says he’s finally comfortable shooting the ball when he’s open. Before he was scared he’d miss a shot, now he’ll let those open shots fly. I was still skeptical, but that’s exactly what he’s looked like in pre-season games, and he’s the guy getting minutes on a deep Wolves bench.
Minott in general is still a mystery bag. For the last two years, and even in college, he has barely been able to play competitive games, because the Wolves were leaning into changing their franchise by trying to win every game with vets like Taurean Prince or Kyle Anderson. There were whispers that Minott was getting frustrated by the lack of NBA playing time, an attitude I consider an asset for a kid that wants to compete. While he’s only got two year’s left on his Hinkie Special, he’s still 21, 6-8, and has great athleticism. People have been excited about Minott even after the draft and a great Summer League, but the team just hasn’t gotten the opportunity to open that Christmas present, to know what he is. Typically a young, cheap, athletic kid with a couple years of experience would be a better fit for a contender than some rookie, and that would be true for MIN but they are too deep. However, Minott doesn’t seem to want to wait his turn any more, and with all his improvement he may force his way into the rotation.
But the Wolves are deep. With guys like 6MOY Naz Reid, Nickiel Alexander-Walker, and Donte DiVincenzo, they may have the best 6-8 guys in the league. Minott is probably more valuable to another team that can give him minutes, so a potential trade candidate. However, until he proves it on the court for more than a couple pre-season games, I don’t think any team is giving up a 1st for him.

You may very well be right, but like you say, he still needs to prove it on the court. If he does, sure, he can drammatically change his trade value in a few weeks. But until then I don't see much point in having this debate.

To be brutally honest, no one saw Minott as a first-round talent on draft night and he hasn't done anything since to change that assessment. Not sure why someone would give up a first for him now.

This isn't true. Hollinger had him #12 on his board.

NBA clearly didn't agree. It's not like he was even a high 2nd. He was drafted 45th, right in the middle of the 2nd round
