Major Wizards/Mavs trade (not really)

Post#1 » by Texas Chuck » Tue Dec 10, 2024 5:03 am

Picking the Wizards because these two teams make trades with each other. A lot. Including minor, minor deals like this (See Blair S&T where Dallas did Washington a similar solid). Done on deadline day.

Dante Exum/$2.5M cash/2nd round swap*

for

top 55 protected future 2nd (ie nothing)

*Washington can swap the 25 PHX 2nd with the 25 DEN/PHI 2nd(Dallas gets the better of those). So essentially if Phoenix has a better record than either Denver or Philly, in addition to the cash they move up in the 2nd.

Why for Dallas? Duck tax so they actually save money on the trade despite sending out cash. This does require them to run just a 14 man roster, but they've been doing that all year with Exum out so no loss there.

Why for Washington? Make a cash profit despite taking on salary because the prorated amount due Exum will be under $1.5M at that point giving Washington over $1M in cash profit--plus maybe moving up a bit in the 2nd round as a slight sweetener.

You don't duck the tax though? Aren't you at like 176M against the cap right now (per spotrac)? dropping 3.15M still leaves you a few mil above the tax line

I used a different source that had them at $3M over. So yeah this thread is pointless then lol.

Thanks for the correction.
