Re: Top 100 Players According to HNI - Average of BPM, VORP, EPM, Est Wins, LEBRON, GmScPM and Total GmSc
It's an interesting compilation of average rank in different stats, but not sure how much discussion value we can get from looking at this.
By that I mean, I don't know exactly what we can directly imply or suggest from this to have a discussion about. I guess it's sort of trying to gauge impact rankings, but it's also not truly that. Outside of the quibbles about specific rankings that we all love, not sure there's too much there.
As an average, being really low in one or two can really pull you down, and then what if that one is something that isn't really that meaningful? We have total game score and other totals in there, right, so playing more games will help over guys who have played fewer if on if the ranks is by total.
A role player having more "impact" in his role than star players or higher volume guys in their role is not even a concept that's new to advanced stats. Advanced stats might have a number to quantify it, but it's stuff that people already would say in the past.
Doesn't mean that guy is a better player or that he can play the same role as the star guy and be effective, but it does mean he's being a star in his role.
That said, my post above says my thoughts regardless of the impact in role aspect of any stat.

I think mixing up the per minute ratings with the totals like EPM vs Estimated wins will skew toward guys that don’t play as much. One of the problems of averaging. Some of these stats like LEBRON and EPM already take in components of the other stats before adjustments, so there seems like a redundancy that skews toward the rawer box score data (BPM, VORP, Game score) by averaging it all together.
Using such a small number of minutes will mix small role players with starters which also makes it weird.

A lot of complaining about Victor being anointed too early after last season during the summer when the metrics show he is already a top 10 player in the NBA this season. Good stuff

Not a big fan of just averaging their ranks. Would be better if they got a score for each metric based on a scale.
For example:
Player A has the #1 EPM, which is 20% better than the #2 EPM from Player B.
Player B has the #1 LEBRON, which is 2% better than the #2 LEBRON from Player B.
This metric would give equivalent rankings for those two stats combined. But Player A should be ranked higher based just on those two stats, so a scaling grade for each stat in the combined metric would be better imo
