What's your opinion of players casually swearing on live tv interviews?

Post#1 » by D.Brasco » Mon Dec 30, 2024 4:27 pm

Read on Twitter

I'm sure some will think the league went too far, however, is it that hard to refrain from swearing in what is technically a professional setting for them?

I feel most of us are able/expected to control our language when in a work setting.

My opinion is they shouldn’t be cursing. No problem with the fine. Grow up Ant.

Not a big deal.

Totally unprofessional. We don't swear while we talk with our boss or client and players should also watch their language while giving interviews on tv.

I hate it.

This doesn't make me dislike ANT, because it's just a specific kind of ignorance, but... time and place. Be professional.

I really do hate it in that context.

Fine away, Silver.

(For context on the $100k, this was ANT's third time cursing in a live TV interview this month. Each time, the fine increased.)

See my comment below for clarification. I guess "live TV" is a broad range. There's a big difference between Christmas on ABC and a postgame presser on nba.com... And I don't know in what setting ANT's previous infractions occurred.

Jeez, so he knows he shouldn't do it but doesn't care.

I think what gets me on this, is it's not like those situations where the player is super heated and emotional and let's out of curse, he just doesn't care.

Comparing our professional work settings to pro athletes is kinda silly.

That being said... branding is very important for pro sports leagues. And if they don't want pro athletes cussing... then, they need to find a way to curb it. A $100k fine is one of the larger fines we're going to see. Edwards will probably take the hint eventually.

Heck, considering the league only fines players $2k for flopping, $2k for flagrant fouls, $4k for ejections, et al... it seems that they are serious about this issue compared to any of those.

Maybe a more interesting angle is the amount of fines for the same issue. For example, Edwards was also fined $75k earlier this week for ripping officials. The largest fine for such an offense since his teammate, Rudy Gobert, was hit with a $100k fine last year. Others have been fined as little as $25k.

For what it's worth... Edwards has now been fined $224,000 so far this season.

Sorry, I had my facts wrong and I'll edit my comment.

Here's a summary of his previous fines this season:

"He was fined $75,000 on Monday for public criticism of the officiating and using profanity after getting docked $25,000 for his comments in a Dec. 6 win at Golden State.

Edwards was also fined $35,000 on Nov. 17 for making an obscene gesture on the court."

Obviously, the league hopes to find a number that will make him care. I hope they do, too.

I know a lot of people will be it's just words and kids say so much worse online, etc but maybe I'm an old geezer and I think standards still matter and when we just expect more boorish behaviour (meaning we expect less) then that becomes the norm and I don't know if we just want to keep lowering standards of decorum.

Okay, anyone else find people citing everything as "no wonder the ratings are plummeting" really stupid?

Ah, yes, a rule that has been around when the ratings were great is what is causing the ratings to plummet now all of a sudden.

No one: "Man, you know what would make the NBA better? If players could just swear in interviews and didn't get fines".

It's actually crazy to me how many people swear so much that they can't even figure out how to control it in settings where they know they aren't supposed to. Sorry, that's a YOU problem, figure it out or get your fine.

Personally, I couldn't possibly care any less. This is common practice in adult communication. Sanitizing it, especially when most of the broadcasts tend to be after 1900 for the home team, seems archaic to me, at best.

That said, it's in the rules, so the fine makes sense. It's a pointless sum, of course, so it's symbolic rather than punitive in any meaningful way to someone like Ant, but that's another story.

Swearing used to be used in situations where it came out in great frustration or physical pain. Now, so many people just use it to "spice up" , what should be a regular statement.

Not an issue in a casual setting but it's not really a huge deal to control things a bit when you're in an environment where you're getting paid.

The rules exist for a reason, so it is what it is. That said, stuff like this does negatively impact the willingness of players to feel comfortable being more human, which I don't think is great for the NBA. Feels better to just go the "slap on the wrist" direction for stuff like this and keep it pushing.

Sure... and we've seen those "standards" of communication and decorum change in many ways, beyond the world of sports.

Check out how some world leaders share their messages now compared to the usual "standards." And it goes beyond tone or whatever. Even misspellings or incoherency are nearly entirely dismissed or ignored now.

Heck, over Christmas, I had a discussion with teenagers about how using punctuation in text messages is nearly universally considered "a sign of anger/frustration" or even "rude."

I didn't ask what me actually spelling full words indicated...

I just want to know why edwards got fined for this, but Garland didn’t for saying the F word. Interesting how that works…

I love the "No wonder the ratings are plummeting…" part of this tweet. As if there is actually a significant number of people who are watching the NBA less because players are fined for swearing in interviews.

Stephen A and Pat McAfee do it everyday and they work for Disney.

People don't care about that cursing anymore.
