Stephen Curry: Anyone Who Think I'm OK Being On An Average Team Is Insane

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jan 16, 2025 2:44 pm

Two days after indicating that he didn't want Mike Dunleavy and the Golden State Warriors to make a "desperate" move ahead of the trade deadline, Stephen Curry clarified that he is still eager to win. Curry's comments came after a narrow win by the Warriors at the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“Anyone who thinks I’m OK being on an average basketball team is insane,” Curry said. “Take whatever I said, I still stand on it. But that doesn’t mean we’re not in a situation where we are trying to get better, make appropriate moves that help you do that. Mike knows that. We’ve talked about it. That’s the expectation from me. It doesn’t mean you’re reckless. What people’s definition of that is is what I was talking about with Twitter fingers. Trade machines are fun. But what does that actually look like? We’re gonna handle our business. Mike is gonna handle his. We will see where we end up.”

Steve Kerr also spoke to the sentiment he shares with Curry.

“I hope there’s not a misconception that we are not fighting and scrapping and doing everything possible to keep this going,” Kerr said. “It almost feels like the narrative became the Warriors are giving in. We are not giving in. We’re just not gonna give away the future. Those are two totally different things. We’re fighting.”

The more players talk, even the respectable ones like Curry, the more they should think twice about speaking.

Why?

The reception for Curry's comment was overwhelmingly positive -- Windhorst, Bontemps McMahon, Russillo, Simmons, Lowe, Duncan etc etc...

And the timing was perfect for comparison -- in complete contrast to Butler nuking his team and FO

Curry gets to be a fan/team friendly hero and play NBA white knight to Butler's heel.

Zero downside to Curry saying this -- even defending himself in the follow-up keeps the NBA in the media's eye

If you're not giving in then make a freakin trade! This starting 5 (whoever that is from game to game) ain't goin nowhere

If Dunleavy doesn't make a trade he's fired

Umm the downside is he and Draymond are playing for an average team in their final years in the league? Fan perception or "legacy" isn't everything...

the comment doesn't change whether it's an average team or not

it changes literally nothing for the Warriors' plans

It's just for fan perception

if you're making $55m on a team that is .500, then maybe the problem is not the moves the team makes around the fringes.

he said the warriors should NOT make a "desperate" win-now trade that compromises all their assets.

Basically he was honest in public

I'm sure Dunleavy/Kerr already discussed w/ Lacob and Curry that there is nothing out there to move the needle.

They are hard capped.

Most likely trade for GSW honestly is to move a little money out and get below the repeater tax.

Personally, I would've preferred honesty from Jimmy: "This is purely about the extension I didn't get" (versus the nonsense about his "basketball joy" being lost)

Appreciate the honesty from Curry, even if it's self serving bc he gets to look like a team-first guy. Better than throwing a fit about the team not "doing everything possible to win now"
