Anthony Davis Waives Trade Bonus; Mavs Now $628k Under Luxury Tax

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun Feb 2, 2025 7:29 am

Anthony Davis waived his trade bonus in a three-team deal involving Luka Doncic going to the Los Angeles Laker.

The Mavs, who were $5.1 million over the luxury tax before acquiring Davis, are now $628,000 under the tax, according to Bobby Marks of ESPN.

The Mavs originally reached out to offer Doncic to the Lakers "a few days ago."

This seems like a nothingburger headline.

However, in my opinion, it suggests that Anthony Davis HAD to have known about the deal before it finalized. The Mavericks ducked the luxury tax only because he agreed to waive his trade kicker. Dallas would have been even dumber than they already are, to agree to this deal without at least confirming that.

Add on the fact that AD was complaining in the media about the Lakers needing to get a C so he could play PF, and this starts to make more sense. I don't know how Unibrow got so much pull, but it seems he steered the ship here.

My thoughts exactly. If AD was surprised and possibly upset about the trade, there is no way he would waive this. He had to have known the possibility of the trade before it happened. If AD knew, it's possible he might have told Paul not to let Lebron know since Lebron obviously wouldn't be down with such a trade if he found out.

AD knows about the trade. He most likely requested for a trade too.
