Ben Simmons, Nets Agree To Buyout; Simmons To Meet With Cavs, Clippers

Ben Simmons and the Brooklyn Nets have agreed to a contract buyout. Simmons will meet with the Cleveland Cavaliers and LA Clippers as he decides on which team to sign with post-buyout.

 As Simmons was on an expiring $40.3 million contract, this has no impact on the Nets cap space plans for the summer of 2025. Brooklyn projects to have a league-high $50 million-plus in space this offseason.

Because Simmons made more than the equivalent of the Non-Taxpayer MLE on his current contract, he's prohibited from signing with any team over the tax apron. Those teams are the Phoenix Suns, Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets.

In addition, the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors are so tight to their first apron hard caps that they can't fit in a veteran minimum signing.

He's worth the league minimum. Good passer and plays really good defense. His offense is just trash...the teams he's meeting with don't know more offense.

If you remember just a few years ago, people were talking about him like a future superstar, and he received that big contract for a reason. It's clear now, after his mental meltdown, that kind of expectation was overinflated... but he's still at least a backup quality player when he's not injured. Sure, no one's going to give him anywhere near max money at this point, but for a prorated veterans minimum, with no long-term obligation after this season? There are absolutely several playoff teams who would be interested in signing him. Most aren't able to because of salary cap rules, as mentioned in the article, but one of the teams who can sign him will definitely sign him.

simmons' back failed but he failed his basketball career long before that

What position does he even play nowadays? I would take him for the Cavs as a utility guy or backup center but not sure it's worth the baggage.

I also feel like he would weirdly think he's too good for the Cavs despite us being #2 and him being pretty disliked now.

He is too scared of shooting to actually shoot. Everything else (which may be a lot) is secondary to that. You don't sign him at any number.
