What does HOU plan to do this summer as it pertains to Fred Van Vleet? He has a $44.9 Team Option for next year. Amen has obviously been awesome, but is he ready to take over as starting PG? Also, is Reed Shepherd too good to be waiting for his shot? Are either of them actually even PG's? I can see that FVV's starts and mpg indicate he is still a key contributor.
Anyway, presuming HOU is ready to move off of FVV but would like to get value for him as holders of his TO...
HOU drops his TO and re-signs FVV to a 3 year descending deal around $45m, 38m, (34m TO year).
HOU sends: FVV
ORL sends: Wendell Carter Jr, $10.9m, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, $21.6, Jett Howard $5.5, 2 frps
For ORL: FVV might be ready for a more reasonable salary with a few guaranteed years. His existing one was intentionally an overpay due to HOU being so low in payroll and being relatively short-term. FVV is a perfect fit as leader for a young, tough, defensive-focused team with some tremendous young frontcourt talent (like he was for HOU).
HOU may be ready to contend very soon and might value a couple of heady vets that fit and provide depth at key positions. Howard is still an intriguing prospect because he can flat out shoot. He could become a significant contributor in the right role. His inclusion makes me think, especially considering FVV's contract situation and HOU's direction, that not much draft equity is required.

Re: FVV Summer Plan? with ORL
Another thought I had was that, if PHX implodes and HOU turns its attention towards Booker or even Durant, perhaps ORL could participate by taking FVV and contributing players like WCJ, Isaac, Anthony Black, Jett, and/or maybe Cole Anthony to PHX along with some of the massive draft equity that PHX would be looking for from HOU.
VERY ROUGHLY...draft night
PHX gets: Wendell Carter, Anthony Black, Cole Anthony, DEN 25 frp(from ORL), Reed Shepherd, Jabari Smith, multiple frps (from HOU)
HOU gets: Devin Booker, Monte Morris
ORL gets: FVV
obviously, salaries need to be balanced with filler, etc and draft capital negotiated...whole point would be that PHX is blowing it up, so would not likely be as interested in FVV versus promising young guys (Reed, AB, Jett) and guys on short-term deals and, especially draft equity...any twists?

Re: FVV Summer Plan? with ORL
As this recent losing streak has shown, Fred is very very good, just like impact stats have always said even if his box score stuff isn't great. They still need him. Reed is years away from replacing him and Amen years away from having a real PG handle. They need him badly. He needs to still be on the team next year unless they do some big trade for a #1 perimeter player. Would be open to picking up his option and extending down off that to get two lighter years after an expensive one but depends on how everything shakes out with the tax

Re: FVV Summer Plan? with ORL
FVV is pretty critical to what we do and there doesn't seem to be anyone in the wings pressing to take over. People rag on him for not being efficient, but there are like 6 or 7 things a PG can bring to the team and he does like 5 of them very well, which is really noticeable when isn't on the court. Makes his impact underrated imo.
Based on what people close to the team have said, there is an understanding with Fred that he was overpaid upfront and he will resign to a very team friendly deal on the back end to help accommodate all the extensions kicking in.
I do not expect him to be traded, but either resigned to a one year at like 30m (too buy more cheap years but avoid the tax in 26), then extended for multiple years at a low number....or just extend this offseason at a low number.
If any Booker deal happens, it simply has to be Jalen going out, we can't allocate 85m in cap to SGs.

I would really like Isaac on this team, but I don't see how this is feasible for Houston. Even if we were landing Booker, we'd want Fred here. Short of landing a star PG, I can't see Houston wanting to part with Fred, he's much more valuable to us than on the market, and we can just send picks and other filler contracts in his place if looking for upgrades at other positions.

Oh please come to the Raptors board and tell people this. There is just such a vicious contingent of fans who would disagree.

I have certainly noticed the odd vitriol from certain Raptor fans when in comes to FVV...it makes me chuckle.

peoples opinions on FVV has been a litmus test for me on Rockets twitter lol He can be extremely, extremely annoying to watch at times which is probably why people think hes not good or whatever but the impact is undeniable

I watch him and feel like he is slow and short. Seems like he is really streaky this year. Shoots us into a few wins and same for losses.
That said, we need a veteran to balance out the full tilt of the young guys. A friendly declining extension would work.

Re: FVV Summer Plan? with ORL
I don't see Houston moving FVV for lesser parts. They don't need to replenish picks, they already are overflowing with young talent and it sounds like Fred isn't going to hold them over a barrel when it comes to his contract, so feels like they'd only be moving on if they were getting a singular better piece.
I do like the direction for Orlando though. Throwing something in from one of the other threads, I could see Orlando being paid to take on Jrue Holiday or at least just swapping lesser roleplayers for him. Older and not as impactful but at the cost of relatively spare parts he'd still fit the mold as a veteran leader for a young, tough, defensive team.
Wendell Carter Jr and a guard of their choosing from ORL, Boston maneuvers to where they could duck the apron (let WCJ replace Horford, promote Pritchard and fill the gap in minutes with whatever Magic guard comes back). They take a step back but relieve some of the payroll pressure they'll be under while still being at the top of the East.
Magic take on Jrue without giving up any significant assets, take the next couple years to let him guide the young guns and then use his salary as ballast for a major trade to bring in what could be the final piece for a team building towards contention.

Re: FVV Summer Plan? with ORL
I would only trade Fred if he was unwilling to renegotiate at a lower number, which thankfully does not sound like the case. As has been mentioned already, neither Sheppard nor Thompson appear to be ready to the take on the lead PG role full time. He could be more efficient as a shooter but as we've seen in his absence recently, we simply do not look like a team that is playing coherent basketball. Thompson and Jalen have alternated being the lead guard and it's looked nice at times but it's been a struggle for the most part.
For Orlando, I would agree with you that a player like Fred would help them a lot.
