What is the plan here?

Post#1 » by dTox » Tue May 13, 2025 12:47 am

We're building around Scottie, is that it? I held out hope that Scottie was just a placeholder "franchise player" until we get a top 5-6 pick (pushing Scottie to a number 2 or 3 option) but now that's out the window, where does this team go from here? If Brandon freaking Ingram is our best player over the next 2-3 seasons, we are in for a very long ride. Something has to give

Hahaha I love this torture of the two crew. Let me pour fuel on the fire.

We are going to evaluate next season and go from there!

Hey I'm not trying to make this a TWO vs anti-tank thread, just trying to better understand the plan and what the best course of action is for this team, I'm all for "going for it" if it means we get out of the mediocrity of the past 6 years.

Scottie was a top 5-6 player...

Folks are banking way too much on the lottery. We built our best team drafting well and acquiring and developing players. We'll do the same thing here.

The plan was always to compete next year. That's why they traded for Ingram.

They'll probably be in the play-in but could surprise and finish 6th.

This team is still 2 or 3 years away. I still predict that only 1 or 2 starters will be on this team in 3 years.

Still lots of change to come.

I see them trying to be a bit like the Pacers. Scottie/Ingram/Yak and a deep supporting cast of young players.
2019 Eastern Conference All Stars

Derozan
Lowry
Ibaka
Valanciunas
Van Vleet
Delon Wright
Lebron
Embiid

There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

There is no plan you just keep asset building and hope for better results....Also the childish people saying in threads "Oh we laughing at team tank" As if we are the ones on this board controlling the direction where the team is going in....We have just been a bad to mid team....Masai is the one who went this direction because he himself knows we need a influx of talent to come from some where and the draft has always and will always be the Raptors best friend regardless where we are picking...

Trades are not as easy anymore due to stars hand picking their destinations....Like Giannis he will hand pick where he wants to go....Prolly Spurs/Houston/OKC or one of the big market teams...

Raptors are very limited in ways to upgrade the roster and alot will harp on getting draft picks right...Even if we fell to 9th we just gotta hope Masai gets the pick right...

But yeah we are far away from contending still...We might be a fringe playoff team next year but theres not much to be overly excited about.

This team will never be good enough unless they have a bonafide top 10 player. Scottie Barnes will never be a top 10 player.

You keep playing to win and keep building up the talent base, same as was done from 2013-2018.

I wouldn't expect much anytime soon; 2020 to at least 2027 will probably be a mostly wasted decade, before things pick up again.

Treadmill with 1st round exits the next 3-4 years, Scottie walks or we trade him on an expiring with no leverage, after trading away another FRP to try and compete, only to have it spectacularly blow up in our faces again.

We got our chip by stockpiling valuable assets, we have moved away from that and are stockpiling SRP level players, and cast off players that other franchises have no interest in.

The team will absolutely be more watchable, and they will have a modicum of success, the "I just want to see the team win" crowd will be happy, and we will continue to be irrelevant while people point to our record in a weak east. The earth continues to spin.

So basically do the OKC path and accumalte draft picks while going full tank mode.

Honestly for markets like Toronto that is our only hope. This current rostere is just delaying the inevitable.

You are over-valuing top 5 draft picks. Brandon Ingram is gonna be better than 3 or 4 of the top 5 in this draft. So if Ingram is disappointing to you....there was a 70 to 80% chance that a top 5 pick would've disappointed you too.

Maybe this is why the scotty cult was so delusional. The whole scheme seems to secure a top 5 pick and then pretend he's going to be a top 10 player in the nba until you're disappointed again.

Each draft yields approx 0.7 players that eventually become top 10 nba players. That number is even lower (probably less than 0.5) if you limit it to the top 5 picks. Currently, 4 of the top 10 nba players were drafted outside the top 5. And all 3 of the mvp candidates this season were drafted outside the top 10. The real lottery is the draft.

Less than 50% of complete drafts (1 through 60) yield an eventual top 10 nba player.

Looking on the bright side...i'm thankful we don't have to listen to all the hype-prone ppl pretend that our pick is going to become the next magic johnson for 3 years lol.

I was hoping for flagg too. But to be honest...it sounds like anything outside the top 2 picks is gonna be a crapshoot anyways.

Adding Ingram and a 9th overall to our lineup is a big upgrade. Walter, shead, agbaji, gradey, battle, mogbo are all prospects that could take a leap. Our core guys (rj/scotty/iq) are also young enough where a leap isn't out of the question (tho less likely than the others).

So I disagree that the team is directionless. There's a bunch of balls in the air and if 3 or 4 things fall our way....it could mean up to 25 more wins.

Maybe our pick ends up being a top 5 in the redraft
Maybe 1 or 2 of the prospects makes a leap
Maybe scotty and BI turn out to have great Chemistry

I don't think this is a hopeless season at all. I think it was alot worse the summer that fred left and we had no prospects that COULD take a leap. The start of THAT season I was feeling pretty pessimistic. Just couldn't see the plan. But we have alot of prospects and we've added an allstar caliber player. There's lots of things that could happen compared to 2 summers ago where I just couldn't see anything but downwards.

Build a winning team in the regular season, and then make all-in trades to upgrade it into a contender.

Barnes/Ingram/IQ/RJ isn't going to be the final core

We need Masai to hit a homerun with this pick, and we need Scottie, JaKobe, and Dick to surprise us. It's going to be rough, but that's our only path to success. Until the next rebuild in 5-6 years.

From being 9 or 10 deep, with all there picks, and a decent salary cap situation. Basically around the same position they were in before trading for Kawhi. But probably not as good.

I agree. I'm not a fan of Barnes.

lol let’s be real this is going to turn into another thread for two to cry about not tanking right and the future being dark and mediocre this and treadmill that.

3 years of evaluation ought to kill em off for good.

Basically the Chris Bosh Raptors.

Which is fun to watch when you a college student who wants something else to moan about.

But when you're a married adult you have no interest wasting your time watchiing because you no its a path to nowhere. The prototypical Treadmill.
