Tre Mann: Sign and Trade Options

Post#1 » by JMAC3 » Wed May 21, 2025 3:57 pm

Hornets do not have cap space, so most likely option is just to sign Tre Mann to a reasonable deal and him fill the 6th man role this season. However, if they looked to SnT him would there be interest?

For a potential SnT though the deal would need to be 3 year deal (can be unguaranteed), but lets say the deal was 3/30 with last year unguaranteed, any contenders interested in that and what would be your offers?

24 yrs old next year, averaged 12.6 ppg, 4 rpg, 4.5 apg for Charlotte in 41 games on 45/37/80 shooting splits.

Guys like this hold no value in a S&T. You either pay a 2nd to get a TPE or hope a team wants him to be a backup guard and sends you a $10M unwanted player and a 2nd or 2 for playing along.

I don't see any kind of real return though.

Yea most likely S&T only works if they are sending salary to you and he’s not going her way more than MLE either way so it’s just a matter of housekeeping against luxury tax / second apron / whatever salary restriction his next team is facing.

like i said on our board, just hold onto him. His situation is basically what the QO was made for... he's played so little and showed some potential during those games. Not a big enough sample to warrant committing big bucks to, but has shown enough that you don't want him to just walk away. We also do need his skillset and it's not a coincidence our entire season went to **** when he and Grant went down, decimating our second unit.

I would say our best options are:
1) partially guaranteed sub-MLE deal (i.e. 3/30 with UNG final year or TO)
2) 1 year QO
3) extend QO, wait for another team to offer something and match it

He's not netting anything beyond a 2nd in a S&T at this point after an entire season lost to injury, and I would much rather have Mann than a 2nd.

Tre Mann has no value. He is an RFA with an injury history and an undesirable skill-set for his size.

Basically this. Free agents making less than the MLE as a rule aren't going to return anything in a S&T.

I guess where I see it slightly different is
1. He is a RFA, so Hornets have the right to match any offer which always makes sign and trade more likely
2. Most teams do not have cap space, thus adding a player making 10 million they are likely having to do a SnT to sign him.

I just see a lot of playoff teams that are way over the cap right now that aren't going to have any money to add players except maybe MLE type.

Teams like Lakers, Denver, Phoenix, Knicks, Dallas etc have no need for a guard like him?

Tre Mann hasn't proven he can be a rotation player in the post-season. Teams aren't paying extra tax for that type of player.

I think he signs his QO. Anything over that is likely a negative contract. Maybe someone uses the MLE and offers a 3/27 and sees if Charlotte doesn't match. Guys this level and contract amount almost never get compensation in a SNT when the team doesn't need Charlotte help to sign them.

Hard to see a team waiting and tying up money and time for Tre Mann.

Not this offseason. Likely a bunch of teams will be sitting on their MLE/room exception just looking for bargains since they are very few players worth using it on. Waiting a few days to see if Charlotte matches is not the hinderance you making it out to be, he likely will be signing a deal after the initial frenzy of free agency has already slowed down and waiting and tying up money won't be a big deal then.
