Very simple: Pels/Suns- Jose Alvarado for Nick Richards

Post#1 » by Jon1798 » Fri Jun 27, 2025 6:20 pm

As stated…..

Pelicans get: Nick Richards

PG- Poole/ Fears(Murray)
SG- Herb/ Hawkins/ Boston
SF- Murphy/ Bey/ Micah
PF- Zion/ Queen
C- Missi/ Richards

I would expect the Pels to start out with Poole, Herb, Murphy, Zion and Missi. Jeremiah Fears should slide in at backup point guard and get plenty of minutes. Dejounte Murray is likely to miss the first two months or so, maybe back by December or January. Pels never have their whole roster, but in theory minutes may be hard to come by for Jose.

Suns get: Jose Alvarado

Point guard seems to really be the biggest position of need for the Suns. They have added two offensive lob threat centers, and a decent amount of athletic wings. I think Jose as energy off the bench and running the show would be a breath of fresh air for a team that lacked energy and effort. Suns probably have disdain for Jose after their playoff matchup a few years ago and some CP3 vs Jose aggregator battles. But certainly the type of guy you love if on your team.

Thoughts?

Suns should do that super fast. Can sign a vet min injury insurance center.

Don't love it for the Pels who should just do the same.

Am I crazy for thinking Richards was really good last year? 7 footer, per 36 of 15.2 points, 13.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. Missi has a ton of potential, but it’s still potential in a lot of ways. And if he gets hurt, there is no height behind it.

Alvarado is worth more IMO, but if the Pelicans feel like they need a vet to rotate in with Missi and Queens, maybe they go for it.

Really good is a stretch, but I think he's marginally better than whoever the Pels could sign for the vet min. Plus NO has a zillion PGs and so they might prefer to move some salary around. Alvarado probably has slightly more value but it feels like it's within the range where a 2nd or even some cash could do it.

So despite my love for Jose, I like this move. My only considerations are that 1, Phoenix fans hate Jose and 2, can't we sign Richards outright? There's no way they keep his option with Williams and Maluach onboard.

Ehh, Williams is super injury prone and Maluach is a 19 year old rookie. They should probably carry at least one other center.

Richards is pretty bad, all things considered. Has a few matchups he plays well against and looks like a starter, but the rest of the time, he's completely confused on both ends of the court. Picture rookie James Wiseman on the Warriors. And now pretend that exact player is 27 years old. He's 7' and moderately coordinated, so he'll stay on rosters for the foreseeable future, but he's not good.

Suns should take this trade in a heartbeat.

I've been unimpressed every time I've watched Richards. His stats always look good but he doesn't impact the game much. Hassan Whiteside vibes.

This can't be possible. Half the time Wiseman looked like it was his first time on a basketball court.

Bey is not a throw in for me. We are able to make that trade straight up via trade exceptions though( Jose for Goga). And yes, I could see that making some sense.

Nick Richards is atrocious. The Suns should just cut him as his contract is not guaranteed. The Pelicans should absolutely not trade a decent backup guard for him.

I think the Suns like having Richards. He’s a 10 and 10 guy off the bench and can start if *when* Williams gets injured. At least until Maluach is ready to contribute. All of that said, I like Alvarado more so I think the Suns should and would do it. If I’m the Pelicans I try to get them to add a top 45 protected 2nd rounder or something to offset the value difference

And then you can flip Karlo Matkovic to Denver for something. You don't need so many Cs

I liked what I saw from Richards in the few times I watched him. Not a fan of Alvarado's game at all; his value to me is mostly as an unlikable pest.
