[Shams] John Collins to LAC
UTA trades: John Collins
in: Kevin Love, Kyle Anderson, 2nd
I really like this deal for us. I think Anderson can be flipped for some value, too.

My fault on the other trade post. Didn't see this post. That was my question. Do we just cut Love and keep Anderson?

I wonder if Love is retiring. I assume we buy him out. I like Anderson, he adds some playmaking, but I think we should trade him. I am sure we can get a 2nd or two. .

Probably. I'd be shocked to ever see Love in a Jazz uni. He and his model wife are based on the East Coast/NYC.

Re: [Shams] John Collins to LAC
I mean I assume we cut Love as well. But doesn’t he also have a Park City home? If we don’t cut him he could be on the roster for nothing more than the “veteran leadership” that apparently all teams need….despite OKC kind of just busting that idea as a narrative.
My point is I guess I won’t be shocked if Love actually is in the building for practices and whatever and doesn’t play a minute this season.

Re: [Shams] John Collins to LAC
I'm very meh on this trade. Jazz get back two players they don't need, and Anderson has an extra season on his deal. I hope the Jazz either flip him or buy him out. I suppose the main positive about this trade is that the Jazz didn't have to attach assets to move Collins. But I suppose that it at least opens up space in the front court for a young player, and it's also good the Jazz didn't get back players who would add unnecessary wins.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

Re: [Shams] John Collins to LAC
I just read an article that says the main plus of this trade is it gives us an $26.2 million trade exception for the next year. Once we get them into the mid level exceptions. If that is right then this trade was very well done.

Re: [Shams] John Collins to LAC
So we get a 25 million trade exception to do what? Be surprised if even use it to do anything good.
Clearly the Jazz valued cap space next year. I know it’s a big free agent year next year….but who would we realistically get with all this cap space? Seems to me we should have done a deal to take back Dame and get assets vs cap space and flexibility.
I’m reminded of one of your guys handle. Who’s got the funny remark about “The real consideration is capspace and flexibility”? Cant remember it exactly. Something like that. Regardless….we’re back to that line of BS. I have yet to ever see the Jazz get a big signing with cap flexibility. And until I see it I don’t believe it.
I honestly believe the collective group of us GM’s on here could have done a much better job as free GM’s than what we have seen since the Rudy and Donovan trades. Not to mention we all wanted to draft Booker over Lyles a decade ago. Man….I want to be optimistic but besides drafting Ace I can’t see much reason to be in a good mood about this team.

Kyle Anderson's 2nd year is non-guaranteed, and becomes fully guaranteed on 6/29/26. So he could be cut for the cap space or be a trade asset due to the flexibility in his contract.

The Jazz also get a 2nd round pick back in 2027--when the Pacers have the Jazz 2nd. Picks to be used to build or trade as an asset.

If we get a $25M trade exception then it's actually a much better deal. It would allow the Jazz to absorb a bad contract with some assets attached. There are several teams with bloated payroll so it may be useful. Either way, it's not that I expected much value from trading Collins even though he's pretty good. I'm just glad we didn't have to attach assets to move him, and that we didn't get better.

If we use our cap space next year to absorb some bad money and get assets I’ll happily grovel at this being a good move. Maybe the FO assumed next year would be better year to take on bad salary due to more teams pursuing free agents? I dunno.
Just bummed we didn’t send Collins and Sexton to the Bucks for their 31st pick. I personally belive that offer was on the table because Locke mentioned it multiple times as a possible offer and said it must have meant the Jazz FO wanted cap space over taking him back. To me I heard “we’re going big game hunting next year” which would be the wrong move. Still way too early to be pushing chips on the table for good players. We need another 2-3 years and a clear number 1 before we go after free agents. We are tanking and we have to stay the course otherwise we will end up right back in mediocrity.
Yea, it is your handle and it’s hilarious. Brings me back to like 10-15 years ago. It’s crazy to think about how long some of us have been on this board/forum.

I know Love loves skiing at Park City a lot. I'd be surprise he suits up.

I hope they sell the space this year as well. You probably won’t get much be we could absorb a large expiring and open up some space for someone else to make some moves and then sell the space again next year.
I also read that if we were to cut those with unguaranteed contracts we could get under the cap by about 22 million plus have the 26M trade exception. So we are in a position to absorb more than one bad deal if we want to.

They were interviewing Austin Ainge during the game and he said the same thing.

Yossi Gozlan: The Jazz decreased payroll enough where they could pivot to becoming a cap space team. They can have $22 million in cap space if they waive KJ Martin and Jaden Springer’s non-guaranteed salaries. This would give them more spending as well as the $8.8 million room mid-level. 23 hours ago – via Bluesky

Re: [Shams] John Collins to LAC
Next questions it seems:
- Walker Kessler extension?
- Do they keep Nurkic, Anderson, and/or Love?
- Waive non-guarantees KJ Martin (guaranteed on 1/10/26) and Springer ( $400,000 guaranteed 7/25/25, $600,000 guaranteed Opening Night, fully guaranteed 1/10/2)?

I hope they keep Kessler, maybe the Nic Claxton deal? Or less AAV but a P.O. after the 3rd year. I don't see why the Jazz don't want to keep him.
If I were the Jazz, I'd say yes on Nurkic, probably with Kyle Anderson and no on Love.

I would love us to sign Quintin Grimes.
