Play each team in group once (2 home / 2 away), the 6 group winners plus the best 2nd place team in each conference all advance to the QF's. Knockout games from there.

Format will work a lot better once there are 32 teams. You can do 8 groups of 4 like the worldcup, with the 2 top teams in each group advancing to the knockout round of 16.
