Mobley for JJJ: rare star for star edition

Post#1 » by esvl » Fri Oct 3, 2025 7:25 pm

Grizzlies get an elite big who is a rim roller needed to play with Ja

Cavs get a similarly elite PF who can play next to Allen, who is an elite rim roller himself.

Mobley is worth significantly more.

The Cavs aren't trading Mobley.

JJJ is a great player, but my theory is this niche of players, JJJ / BAM, the big man defensive specialist, with good but not great impact (fringe allstars) are going to hurt teams, if they end up getting overpaid.

I think the new CBA changes everything, and it is oh so critical to not overpay guys against their impact. I was okay with those two guys on their first extensions, but these second extension are just an absolute killer. The cost keeps rising, but the player growth tends to stop, and sometimes starts declining. This is a death knell.

20-22% of cap
vs
28-30% of cap

Is it safe to say Bane, a good player, was a casualty of this cap % spike by JJJ? Steven Adams maybe too.

Mobley is young, already more impactful than JJJ, and still has runway to improve. Don't think he is quite a 30% max caliber player, but you give him that money hoping he gets there, as he continues to grow.

As such, I have Mobley significantly more valuable, and he is in the unicorn zone of untouchable players.

The rationale described by the OP makes the deal sound pointless for both teams since it pretty much describes the players as similar in their fit and general characteristics.

It does not explain why JJJ is better for the Cavs, or for that matter why Mobley is better for Memphis.

Mobley is to my mind much more valuable and the Cavs would never do this, but that’s almost irrelevant because the trade as presented doesn’t even try to make a case for itself.

Strange post.

Jaren is a better offensive player than Mobley. Mobley is slightly better on defense and is a much better rebounder. That being said Grizz are not trading Jaren.

We need his offense and he is our homegrown talent. Mobley is a great but is best as a center likely due to his 3pt shooting mainly but both are great cornerstone players. Grizz tried moving up to get Mobley but Houston wouldn’t budge.

The rationale is that JJJ is a natural 4, while Mobley is more 5 than 4. Since the Cavs have a great natural 5 already in Allen, JJJ would make a better fit next to him. Redundancy fixed.

The Grizzlies don’t have a star caliber 5, who is a rim runner, to play alongside Ja, since JJJ cannot play PNRs and Edey is a big question mark.

The Cavs F.O. views Mobley as the present and future of the franchise. He won DPOY while averaging 18.5 ppg (on 12.8 fga) and 9.3 rpg at 24 years of age. They believe he'll be even better offensively next season. There is nothing the Grizzlies could offer that could make a Mobley trade happen.

I also don't agree that Mobley is more of a 5 than a 4. His floor game is improving, as is his shooting from behind the arc. I expect Mobley to mimic Duncan, manning the 4 for the first half of his career before transitioning to the 5 for the second half.

Yep. Mobley is still pretty skinny, well under 240 even after years of the weight room. Most Cs are 250+.

His offensive game depends on contact, a little bit of bully-ball, which works much better for his weight against 4s than 5s.

If/when Cleveland decides Allen/Mobley don’t work, you trade Allen.

I do like the idea of Allen/JJJ.. But just shouldn’t move Mobley.

I concur. Memphis should start with JJJ + Wells + 1st 2030 just to show they are serious.

I think you're missing the point. Memphis should go after Allen, they're not getting Mobley.

I missed nothing - I opened a corresponding Allen thread last season. He remains my target, but not at the cost of JJJ, of course.

They are similar players. Both are tweener-ish PF/C's who play elite defense but sometimes struggle against burlier centers.

The big difference is that Mobley is 2 years younger and still on the upward progression of his career while JJJ is probably more or less at his peak. Also, Mobley is a notably better rebounder.

Mobley is clearly more valuable than JJJ so there's no point in Cleveland doing this.

And on a contract that doesn't reflect the fact that he's frequently injured. He's talented, and will likely have good trade value, but if he's moved it will be to a team that's looking to achieve escape velocity from a rebuild rather than a contender over the second apron.

I don't see either team doing it, though Cleveland should consider it more seriously.

Is either Hali or Tatum frequently injured? Just curious what is the standard.

Neither of those guys is in this deal. It looks like JJJr plays about 10 fewer games per season than Mobley.
