1 of 82 down, that was the worst this offense will look

Post#1 » by three3d » Thu Oct 23, 2025 3:49 pm

Statistically there might be worse nights but in the grand scheme of things this was the first time the starting 5 has played together in this new offensive scheme. I don’t think we’ve even scratched the surface of just how good we are about to be this season, let that sink in for a moment. Prunty outside Bane is the BIGGEST addition this team has made outside drafting the core since Rashard Lewis probably. These guys are only going to get better the more familiar and comfortable they become playing this style. Once they finally have some actual game film to watch to see how the defense responds to certain situations and/or plays they will develop counters to those plays and know the spots to be in. Post All-Star break I believe we are going to take off, buckle in it’s going to be a wild fast season.

Yes, we won this Game 1 with the Starters usually losing the lead all the way until the mid-4th quarter. Their defense was not so good either, many tangible things to improve. Imagine when the Starters start building leads and giving it to the 12-man deep Bench.

What might be overlooked about Bane with Memphis last season was that the Grizzlies led the league in pace of game with 106 possessions per game and was 6th in offensive efficiency. Putting that type of player next to Suggs who’s always seemed to play fast and Franz who’s been running the court well in preseason it’s going to be crazy.

Goga’s high post play also doesn’t seem to get enough attention. Once these guys learn how to move off Goga’s high post playmaking ability there will be so many easy layups and FG attempts.

Imagine also Suggs healthy and no minutes restricted.
Mo Wagner back as the only other player to get the home crowd as loud as Suggs does.
All the fine-tuning and adjustments by the Coaches to come. Mosely and Prunty masterminding it all.
Maybe one or two players from the Bench start looking like young rising stars in the league (ahem.. AB, Jase, TDS).

In the immediate post game interview, Bane had a quick throwaway comment apologizing for the messy game by talking about how they still need to get a little more organized. (I don’t recall if he was referring to defense or not.)

I saw in an article that Bane was also the highest usage player at 30%. It’s almost kind of embarrassing to both our players and prior coaches that he comes in one game and is immediately the one trying to add some coherence to the offense.

I love our players but thank goodness we have him. I think we’ll say the same about Tyus for the bench unit when we’re not going up against a ruthless coach hunting him down.

Yeah, it looked a little dysfunctional. You can see Paolo fighting his demons every time he has the ball, the temptation to iso into a contested middy is very strong. You could see that Franz wasn't always comfortable passing to Paolo when looking for swing-swing actions and even completely ignored Paolo at times.

They are trying to install an offensive system that subtracts Paolo on-ball time and it will take some time to adjust.

I would say Paolo needs to learn how to cut to the basket without the ball in his hand but he’s not really great at finishing at/near the rim. It’s one of the more frustrating things about his game, his so big strong and fast yet is poor around the basket.

Desmons bane pick and roll with Paolo is going to be a kryptonite for alot of teams. They have to work on that play to exploit mismatches whenever we can.

Yes at points it was messy but even that game 1 offense was better then anything we saw all last year. Desmond Bane is truly the perfect prototype of player to pair up next to Paolo and Franz.

We havent even unlocked what Jase can be. Thats another ball handler and shooter. We have ALOT to look forward to.

This offense fits Franz like a glove....Paolo has to adjust a bit as he's been used to a slower pace but he's played in a higher paced offense before in college

My major reflection to game-1 was the poor defense by the team. The Magic was clearly winded from playing a lot more fast-break basketball. But the team will get in better shape playing like this on offense, so close wins early season to get into a better offensive groove, I am OK with a temp-slide on defense.

I think that’s a really good take…Paolo’s a winner but he’s bullied opponents to great personal success for years, even at the NBA level. For the TEAM to take the next leap towards true contention, he’ll need to adapt somewhat. His unstoppable iso ability will always be critical, especially in the playoffs, but doing more to lift others as threats could move him into MVP consideration

Yup my exact thoughts. Paolo is used to Mosleys (or lack there of) turtle paced slow half-court offense, where he goes ISO and bullies everyone. That can work in the season but not in the playoffs (e.g. Boston). Having Bane, suggs back, and a new offensive system that pushes for a faster pace will be an adjustment for Paolo. However for Franz, this is going to benefit him tremendously. He might very well be our best player this year. Nothing to worry about. Paolo is a super skilled player who will adapt. However maybe the MVP expectations can take a break.

well if Paolo can average what he did against Boston for the whole year then he may very well be in MVP conversations if we're winning since Boston couldn't stop him....I don't think the adjustment period will be very long, he'll get there....

We could've easily gone 0-3. I don't feel good about this road trip.
