Moons contract?

Not sure if this has been discussed.

How much do you think it is going to take to re-sign Moon to a new contract after having his break out season? How long should he be signed for?

but seriously, he brings more to the table than Kapono at this point, so that would definitely factor in ... so the $$$ figures will definitely be more than 6M/yr ... But all things considered, the Raptors have to find a way to lock this guy up ... BC has to keep Moon in mind, when deciding how much he's willing to fork out for Calderon ...

Please understand that Moon has a team option for next season at $740,000. Therefore he is under contract for next season and will have no bearing on our summer signings.

Bingo!

Also, I really don't think he'll get more than 4. He still struggles a lot with shooting and doesn't become a factor in games for weeks at a time.

I bet BC offers him a contract this summer. Jamario clearly deserves more than 740K/season. We could probably get him at a steal if we don't exercise the team option and offer something more substantial. I just don't feel like he would hold out on a legit offer this summer, in order to test the free agent market two summers from now.

Thanks for clearing that up. There was no mention of it on hoopshype's salaries. I guess that is why there hasn't been much discussion about it yet.

doesn't seem like moon is the type to pull a boozer. but i think if BC offers something substantial to moon, i don't think moon would turn him down after raps gave him a shot. yes 3-4 would be a good salary, more close to 4 maybe 4.5 considering hump is gettng 3per

Essentially, Moon is under contract for a pittance next season, and because we will have his early Bird rights after '08/'09, Colangelo has the inside track on re-signing him: his status as a two-year vet will place him under the Arenas provision, which makes it extremely difficult for any team (including us) to offer him a deal above the MLE.

It's quite likely that we will be able to retain him...and thanks to the CBA, it will probably be for a bargain price compared to what he has brought to the team.

I was unaware of an Arenas provision in the CBA. Can you elaborate on the conditions and restrictions?

Basically, no team can offer Moon more than the MLE for the first two seasons of his new contract. If a club had $8m in capspace in '09/'10 and wanted for whatever reason to offer him a five year deal, they would have to structure the contract in such a way that it averaged out to the amount of their capspace...in this case, $40m overall. After the first two years, the salary can jump well above the MLE threshold, so the deal would look something like:

Year 1: $6m Year 2: $6.5m Year 3: $8.5m Year 4: $9.2m Year 5: $9.8m
Total: $40m

So any team wishing to sign him to a big contract would have to weight the deal toward his final seasons. Because Moon will be 33 in the final year of a five year contract, it's definitely questionable whether a GM would be willing to fork over that much for a role player just about to hit 30, knowing that he'll be footing the bill for three seasons after that.

Moon is one of the few players that I hope gets paid. He's earned it. 7yrs of working towards the NBA without so much as a sniff is pretty admirable. And his family from what I've read is dirt poor.

He should be making 4.5 million , MAX. This offseason sign him to 3 year 12 million (4 mil each year). He's not a great offensive player but is a good energy player and his defense is pretty good.

Moon shoulda gotten Joey's contract at the beginning of the season, had we known then what we know now.

I can see Moon wanting to stick with Sam and the organization that gave him his 1st chance. Factor in that BC is a very fair person who believes in rewarding talent that deserves rewarding and Moon should be extended at roughly 3/4 mill per season for 3 years. That would be a steal IMO for such a talent.

Unfortunately, the NBA is a business and as Moon is already under contract for next year (team option at 740 000$), there's no way BC will give him more than what the original contract gives him. Moon signed a 2 year deal as we were the only team to believe in him at 27 years of age. It's sad that a good guy like him will be the least paid player on the team but he will get paid more in the summer of 09 when he'll be a RFA...
