Are we wasting our 1st round picks?

Post#1 » by Magix3 » Sun Jan 27, 2008 10:53 pm

With the exception of Dwight (1) Jameer (20) in 04, i feel that we've done a bad job of drafting...In the First round at least

We had no 1st rounder in 07, 06 we drafted JJ but we never play him, 05 Is what me and my buddies like to call the Fran Fiasco, Had an easy decision to make in 04 (even if we drafted Emeka) with the 1st pick, Reece Gaines in 03, and Ryan Humphrey in 02, and in 01 it was Steven Hunter...

How do you feel?

Well before Dwight it was a different management group, in which Otis and Twardzik had less or no input. Since then they've done better. As for Fran and JJ, both were the 11th pick, which IMO is a cursed spot in the NBA Draft. Look back at past 11th picks, just bad.

We are bad at drafting...it is what has held us back for years. No matter how well you do in free agency, you have to be able to draft. The drafting of the next 4 or 5 years is going to be very important towards the success of this team long term due to the cap.

Yes, we draft terribly. This is not news. Unless the Magic pick #1 they screw it up. It is pretty much that simple.

The Magic have been good at top lottery picks and second round picks. Outside of Nick and maybe then then Brian Williams, mid-firsts and late first have been dogs.

Some first rounders:
Stanley Roberts
Geert Hammink
Brooks Thompson
David Vaughn
Brian Evans
Johnny Taylor
Jeryl Sasser
Curtis Borchardt
Reece Gaines

... and of course ...
Fran Vazquez and J.J. Redick

Like Cig showed, there have been lots of good #11 picks...don't know why we've seemingly screwed it up twice in a row now.

cause we went with needs instead of taking the best player available. we took fran thinking he could be the perfect complement to dwight and took JJ because we needed a 3pt shooter to open things up for dwight.

I lost all hope when it comes to the draft. Basically if we aren't picking #1, we will screw it up some how or another. The year we took Fran over Granger was the year I just stopped giving a damn about the draft. This year it will be the same thing. I'm sure we will pass on a sure player for a guy who sucks.

We've drafted Sasser, Gaines, and Vasquez, and you're just now wondering if we waste our first rounders?

That is a great idea, but it will never happen.

Well in that case we would have Okafor over Dwight and still have JJ.

I was one who wanted Okafor early, but then wanted Howard after I heard about his workout for the Magic. I believe most Magic fans swayed towards Howard before the draft.

At the closest it was Okafor 60% to Howard 40% but I think it was closer to 70/30.

This goes to prove my theory...that he should just ask me. I was the guy who wanted Dwight, I wanted Granger the year we took Fran, and I wanted Ron Brewer the year we took JJ. I even wanted Boozer the year we took Sasser and Hunter. Just give me a call Otis, we can talk in depth about why the Magic suck at drafting.

In the past decade I'd say we got it right with Dwight, Jameer, Mike Miller and Corey Maggette... Matt Harpring was okay... The rest we probably got it wrong.

No Team gets it right every year...

Dallas:
Got it Right: Josh Howard, Dirk Nowitzki, Devin Harris
Got it wrong: Pavel Podkolzine, Etan Thomas, Courtney Alexander, Donnell Harvey, Leon Smith, Chris Anstey

Detroit:
Got it Right: Tayshaun Prince, Jason Maxiell (maybe), Bonzi Wells (maybe)
Got it wrong: Scot Pollard, Darko Milicic, Carlos Delfino, Rodney White, Mateen Cleaves.

Houston:
Got it right: Luther Head, Yao Ming, Kenny Thomas
Got it wrong: Boston Nachbar, Eddie Griffin, Jason Collier, Michael Dickerson, Bryce Drew, Mirsad Turkan, Rodrick Rhodes

etc etc...

We have been worse than most as far as bad draft picks.

Exactly the same as me. I started following the draft more in 03 draft and I wanted Barbosa(and kinda liked Diaw a little, but not over Gaines) over Gaines, Dwight over Okafor, Granger over Fran, Brewer over JJ.
