Otis tell the Sentinel again trades are unlikely

Smith: Deal still unlikely
Brian Schmitz | Sentinel Staff Writer
February 3, 2008

General Manager Otis Smith reiterated that he isn't inclined to make a trade before the Feb. 21 deadline, though the Magic are loaded with expiring deals. Expiring contracts come off a team's books after the season or can be used in trades with teams looking to improve their salary-cap situations. The Magic are paying six players in the final years of their deals, including current starters PG Carlos Arroyo and SG Maurice Evans. The others are SG Keyon Dooling, their top reserve; and Fs Pat Garrity, James Augustine and Bo Outlaw, who was waived in November.

Smith indicated he's more apt to let his players' deals expire. "I like our team the way it is right now. Guys we have understand what they're doing and compete night in and night out and give us a chance to win," he said. "Contracts, expiring or not, sometimes need to expire off your books as well." A little more than $15.5 million will come off the Magic's books, but the contract extensions of C Dwight Howard and PG Jameer Nelson kick in for a combined $18.5 million next season. With F Rashard Lewis making $17 million in 2008-09, Orlando might have some tough choices. SF Hedo Turkoglu is signed through 2008-09, then has a player option for 2009-2010. "I'd like to see us keep this group together," Dooling said. "We're developing a great bond."

I would have to agree with Otis. Mo Evens and Keyon Dooling I would'nt let get away. They are both playing real well. That really does'nt leave alot of value to deal with. Carlos in my opinion is good for us but probally does'nt hold alot of value around the league just because he has a history. I just don't think we have alot to offer. I know alot of dumb asses out there don't like Kyon but they are idiots, and Mo Evans has fit very nicely. That does'nt leave alot to work with.

No trades in the works.

I wonder why Garrity is playing again after 3 months of CD-DNP's.

LOL.

God I hope so.

How will we fill out our roster next summer with only the MLE and Vets min?

Don't we have to trade at least a few, i.e. PG, to get back a good piece with a contract that is not expiring to help fill the roster next year, or am I not understanding everything.

Just a little worried

again, i believe him this time...i dont think we are going to do anything...i think that as far as our expirings go, we're relying a lot on them, i think that both SVG and Otis love Dooling, Arroyo is a backup PG and we're hobbled there so they will hold on to him for depth purposes, Pat Garrity has been around so long, Otis wants to keep him until he expires because it's the honorable thing to do, plus you keep hearing how he's the hardest practice guy on the team. I believe Otis when he says that he's not trading JJ for some reason. and when it all boils down as if the above mentioned isnt on point, our pieces arent worth enough to land significant help...

I don't think Garrity playing has anything to do with trying to move his value up.... because when Garrity plays, he tends to lower his trade value.

If the Magic don't make a move at the trade deadline then this tells me that Devos is not really interested in spending what it takes to get a championship here.

I know that he spent for Rashard and he gave Dwight his extension. But it could have simply been to show the locals that he was willing to spend so he could get the new Arena. Now that he has it, he might toe the line below the luxury tax so he can get the money back from the NBA.

I am also tired of hearing the same BS from Otis.

I do not agree. The Magic are now essentially committed to being above the cap for the next five years. Add to that what will likely be two fruitful years of FA spending; the Magic will go over the LUX tax in the 2010-2011 season. That choice was already made.

Wow, you really don't know what you're talking about. The Magic have been one of the highest paid teams the last several years. The DeVos family has made a commitment and told the GMs we've had (including Otis) that they can spend whatever they need to to win a championship.

Next year we're going to have a salary of 59 mil, and that's with 9 players right now. So say we resign Dooling and Maurice. Maurice to 3 mil a year, Dooling to 3.5 mil a year. Then there's Arroyo, who the Magic might bring back. But for arguements sake, we'll say they let him walk (could be him or Dooling, i don't see both being back next season).

So still 4 more positions to fill. The Magic will have both the MLE and the LLE, plus a 1st rounder I believe (though the 1st rounder won't make a whole lot since it'll be late 1st round). The MLE will probably start around 5 mil, and the LLE around 2 I think.

So we have Dooling, Evans, MLE, LLE, and draft picks. Approximately 14-15 mil, and still a spot to fill probably.

That puts the Magic's payroll over $70 mil, and makes them one of the top payroll teams in the league...again.

I agree with Otis at this point in not making a trade. The team is playing great, we're winning games. Then in the offseason address the holes. Maybe we can find a way to keep both Hedo and Rashard. I don't see how, but maybe we can run this season out, and in the offseason sign a big man and move Hedo to SG and Rashard to SF.

I would love to just move Garrity and Arroyo, problem is they have the least value out of our expirings imo

and unfortunately the only way to trade arroyo is to get another pg back or we would have to sign someone not playing in the league right now

I think its a smokescreen. If a trade doesn't happen, it won't be because we didnn't have interest in one. He's got to be shopping some expiring contracts, maybe not all, but at least some. If we get a player that we want now, then we won't have to use the mle this summer. Its the same as letting them expire and using the mle essentially. It doesn't make a difference, if they are indeed watching their dollars. Its time for teams to start unloading players, and decide if they want to compete or rebuild. Otis would be foolish not to keep track of the market.

i think we're stuck between a rock and a hard place with our particular expiring contracts...the majority of them are guards...considering that we dont have one standout, excellent go to guard, we're forced to constantly keep rotating them and using the quantity vs. quality approach....and that's why i feel we'll be sticking with what we have...

anyone who says they are happy with the teams play right now is looney!!!!!

We barely beat Philly and Indiana???!!!???

This team has been playing NOOO defense.

If your happy with this team you obviously dont want to go anywhere in the playoffs because detroit and boston will spank us.
