Why do players ALWAYS leave 3pt shooters open in the clutch?

I was watching the NYC-Spurs game and I thought the Knicks got them(im a closet Knicks guy) but then Ginibillio passes to an open Finley in the corner for the tie... and got it. Knicks lost but I see this almost every week now. What's so hard to understand that if you're up by 3 with the shot clock off STAY WITH YOUR MAN, don't go in the paint to help or rebound, stay with him.

Why don't coaches drill this into their heads?

When I see it happen, the majority of the time its because someone Iso's, penetrates, and the guy covering the 3pt shooter comes in to help out.

Its just like gambling. Are you more worried about the guy with the ball penetrating and scoring inside, or the other guy 20some feet out.

How about a different situation, where you are down 1 or 2, of course you have to toughen up in the interior. If you play man on man it'll be very easy for someone to blow by you and score, and you will usually foul out of frustration and puts the other team in a very comfortable position to take the lead.

Also there are a lot of open 3s because the team on defense can't see the clock so when the ball is kicked out there'll be like 3 guys springing out to contest the shot and that person will make an extra pass to a wide open player.

It takes a really good defensive team to be able to guard that well.

It doesn't happen all the time, and it was the knicks defense that left him open :lol:

It's easy when the pressure is on to leave shooters wide open. Espicially with a player like Ginobili, if they give him an iso or he gets a good screen the defense HAS TO collapse. Obviously Ginobili in the paint is more efficient then Finley from 3. In the clutch, when the pressure is on, you don't even think about it. It becomes your natural instinct.

It wasn't that the Knicks left Finley opened, it was because Pops knew Balkman would go to help and as soon as he did, Duncan stayed in front of Balkman making Finley have a wide open 3.

It was just a very good play made by a very good coach.

They don't ALWAYS leave them open, and if the team is a bad defensive team, that the problem. They are a bad defensive team. If you referring to Robert Horry and his array of Shots in the past, its because people are so concentrated on the ball handler and because its a BIG game (meaning playoff game), they tend to go off their man a little bit so they can help defend the ball handler.

Lamar Odom blocked Rashard Lewis' three at the end of the game last night.

Overall, I'd hate to lose to a drive down the lane to an easy layup than to an open three.

The Spurs were down by 3, and the Knicks allowed Finley to shoot a corner 3. A layup should not have been of concern. However, it is the Knicks, so the real question is how could the Spurs be down in the first place?

It always seems to happen to the Suns whenever they play the Spurs. Inevitably, Finley, Barry, Gino or Bowen will sink a crucial 3 in the clutch.
