Laker Payroll Questions

Post#1 » by Mr. Sun » Sat Feb 23, 2008 10:57 pm

Lakers have a $71,753,284 payroll now, and $75,330,112 next season. This must be giving Jerry the fits.

Bryant, Gasol, Odom, Radman, Walton, Bynum, Farmar all look locked for next season. That's it. That's $67,069,212 in salary. No 1st round pick for '08?

Sasha Vujacic is going to cost major $$$ to resign. Bynum isn't going to be cheap. Odom is going to have to be replaced for 09/10.

UPDATE: Forgot Phil Jackson now costs the Lakers $12 million a year. Lakers had $32 million operating income last year after expenses. Lakers is Buss' only source of income.

The question is: What will the Lakers do?

I hope that the Suns try to get Ronny Turiaf, he is no differance maker but he will indeed bring energy and a jump shot that would help spread the floor.

with resigning Vujabitch and Turiaf the Lakers are going to be close to $100 million with the tax.

and Buss will pay it with a smile on his face.

Oh snaps you are right! Our bankrupt, small-market team, whose owner can't even afford to party with Playboy playmates, surely can't afford that! NoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOoooo

Its not that he can't afford it, it is that he, like many owners do not want to pay the lux tax. I don't blame him no matter what market he is in.

I really don't understand why this is even a thread. who cares?

Even if they lose vujabitch and Turiaf, they still have a great bench. It wont hurt them at all. If Mihm ever gets healthy, than that is not a bad back up for their bigs next year. another 7 footer.

Good topic Mr.Sun, my take on the matter is while the luxury tax is a valid issue theres always a way to get under. Though most of us do like how the team is currently built the Lakers do have contracts that they don't have to keep.

I don't know how much you know about Dr.Buss but he's alway had a willingness to pay to win if need be. He has alway profited from the Lakers when their winning. Remember not all the money players make comes from just the owner alone, the league has revenue sharing from TV, advertising and stuff.

Hell the very arena the Lakers play in Dr.Buss doesn't pay a dime in rent to the arena's owners. And I know you guys would like to have Turiaf but as a fan of him myself it'll be crazy to let him get away like that.

Bottom line is as far as the salary concerns, even as it is now the Lakers aren't in the top 5 in the league( not sure on that).

Your Suns with Mr.Sarver has basically did the same with the Deisel, plus every team has a poison contract on their hand too. You guys with Diaw and us with Walton. Bottom line is if you want to win in the NBA you gotta pay for it.

Yes, he has paid it in the past for specific players. As it is now though, anyone he signs suddenly costs him double and there is no easy way for him to get out from it like in the past.

But he has debt service, operating costs, taxes, etc. He is paying rent!

I think with the new contract Jackson has, Laker operating income is going to be very strained and Buss is going to be pressured to cut costs. Don't forget Lakers went into panic mode over Sparks costs at Staples.

Lakers payroll was at 75+-M a few years back, just without luxury tax. I'm pretty sure they can take the hit, LA is one of the biggest markets out there, and they have a lot of loyal fans as well as bandwagoners that make them a lot of money. Also, even when they were sucking really hard, their ticket sales remained fairly constant, and prices did not drop very much. As opposed to the Clippers, who had to hire teenage sportsmarketers to hand away tickets for free.

Sasha isn't getting squat. He's a product of the coaching. He should be thankful to even be in the league. Tonight's game against the Clippers shows that he gets abused on the defensive end by anyone, anytime. Farmar is panning out, so they can probably afford to let him go.

Great chance we'll have a little trouble re-signing Odom but it won't be that bad....

Maximum we lose one player out of Vujajic-Turiaf-Odom.

It would be a loss but wouldn't change the equation that much as far as the starting lineup goes (Odom at SF won't be incredible, it'll be very good). Buss will probably pay up since advancing a round in the playoffs is a huge monetary gain.

It would seem from this chart that the Lakers are in extremely good financial shape. Money isn't an issue. The only question is whether or not Buss wants to spend it.

Interestingly, this package was topped by a story on how Sarver has turned Phoenix's financial fortunes around:

http://www.forbes.com/sportsbusiness/fo ... ove_google

The Suns made $6 million more than the Lakers did last year, and were the third-most profitable franchise in the NBA with more than $37 million in revenue.

The Billionaire owner of the Staples center, LA Kings and various other interests is also 30% owner of the Lakers. Paul Anschutz worth nearly 8 billion will be more than pleased to see the Lakers win multiple titles in his Arena.

The short answer is that the Lakers owner will pay luxury tax and we will go way over the cap. The long answer is we will be winning rings year after year. I think you should be worrying about your Suns' cap situation. Hopefully we will meet the Suns in the playoffs, so we get a chance to sweep them clean. Order has finally been restored in the Pacific Division. Sorry Suns, goodluck winning a title.
