The Curse of Les Boulez

After a night's sleep, I'm just in complete disbelief as to how snakebitten the Wiz are with injuries.

The very game that Gilbert returns -- and has a decent showing -- our two most durable players crumple to the floor within seconds of one another.

Reality seems to be that no matter where they're seeded, the Wiz have little chance of winning a playoff series, and basically no chance of making real noise in the EC.

It's just maddening, because the Wiz clearly have the ingredients to be an elite offensive team and a half-decent defensive one. But without a long run of reasonable health, they will continue to be mired in mediocrity.

Oh basketball gods, I beg for your mercy!

Here's what I don't get: I know what the Sox and Cubs "curses" stem from (The Bambino, Bily Goat). But what actually IS the Curse of Les Boulez? How did this franchise manage to find such disfavor with basketball gods?

More importantly, like all curses, this one can be broken. But how? Human sacrifice? Changing the name back to Bullets (hi Spence)? Save the fire the coach solution, because the curse clearly predates EJ or any of these players.

Seriously though, I always thought of the curse as a joke, but there may be an actual curse, or karma, whatever you want to call it...at least perhaps on Abe. "The curse" will not be lifted until Abe is no-longer owner.

I'm surprised you guys don't know the history of the Curse. Many think Kornheiser coined a phrase that was intended to be a sorta Frenchified version of "Curse of the Bullets." Not so.

Boulez was actually Chief O'Le Boulez of the Pottaknobbee tribe, which was located primarily in upstate New York. Chief Boulez, part Pottaknobbee, part French, and part Irish, was content to oversee operation of the casino located on tribal grounds until his daughter Little Feather Redcorn was brutally murdered (as opposed to "gently murdered") on the streets of Washington, DC. Ironically, she was not a victim of gun violence, but was shoved in front of a bus by a crazed homeless guy named Willie.

Little Feather's sole purpose for being in the DC area was to see a Bullets game at the old Capitol Center. Disconsolate, Chief Boulez called upon the gods to curse the basketball team with injuries, illness, bad luck, and questionable hygiene.

And the rest is history.

EDIT to add -- There IS a way to lift the Curse O'Le Boulez, but so far the team has stubbornly refused to do it. Apparently Abe & company do not believe in curses.
