Quicker First Step: Kobe Bryant or Paul Pierce
I was watching last night's Celtics-Hawks game and came away very impressed with the lightning quick first step Pierce has, from the low post. He abused Marvin Williams two possessions in a row, just blowing past him from a back2basket into a layup/foul. I've never imagined Pierce, a guy who weighs 240-250 containing that kind of quick step.
Now, I ask, who has a quicker first step. Kobe's never seemed extremely fast as much as it seemed like a long stride.

Kobe has a much faster quick step than Pierce but nobody is faster at a first step than Dwyane Wade.
Chris Paul, Tony Parker, Barbosa.
Kobe's first step isn't as fast as it used to be. He's just got amazing timing. He's great at getting your weight moving in one direction then blowing by you in the other direction.

Bryant and Pierce have similar success as others with quicker first steps because they are crafty, savvy, smart offensive players. They have excellent footwork, even on the perimeter, which allows them to get into a position to get by their man. Neither's pure first step is noticeably better than the other. Pierce uses more power, too, while bryant uses more skill and athleticism.
best first step in the league, yea, thats dwade.
an underrated first step: chauncey billups.

I'd say Carmelo has a quicker first step.
+1
I think Carmelo has the quickest first step in the NBA (of the legit stars anyway. I'm sure there's some really good athlete out there who has a lightning quick first step, but can't do anything after that step lol), especially from a three-point stance.
