offseason blockbuster

Post#1 » by stayinschool33 » Sun May 4, 2008 8:07 pm

Now please read this with an open mind. The Dallas Mavericks will probably decide that this is as far as Dirk Nowitzki can take them. Cuban will want to get sizable return on him now.

We have Josh Smith awaiting a near max size deal and Marvin coming off an embarrassing ejection and will always be remembered as not-Chris Paul. We do a sign and trade with Josh Smith and Marvin Williams and include Speedy Claxton contract for Dirk and Jerry Stackhouse.

I don't see how it makes us a better team. Yes we greatly increase our offense...but our defense would suck. I have a feeling that Stackhouse would retire or seek a buyout, so we are left with no true backup wing and in need of a good defensive big still.

because we cannot keep josh smith AND Josh Childress and this way we keep same talent. If Stackhouse wants out then we can bring in another cheap backup SG like Derek Anderson, Shannon Brown or Quinton Ross.
We should be able to bring in Kwame Brown cheap as well.

And we can't keep both why? Yes both will get paid, I doubt Chill will get more than the mle (who will offer it to him).

Who said we can't keep them? Don't know what Chill's asking price is yet, and maybe he will take less here because he is friends with everyone here. Smith is the problem signing. Maybe a new coach would want him to stay.

Josh will want over 10 a year easy, and some team will offer Childress 8 a year as well. It just is not very plausible to think that J-Chill will give a home team discount when he can get more AND start elsewhere.

and I love Josh Smith, I have talked to him before and I love his defensive effort and shotblocking ability. But he tries too hard to shoot like a sf when he has a pf game and is best taking it to the hoop. Think of Bibby having Dirk and Joe as targets with Josh and Horford taking it to the basket. Heck bring in Avery Johnson as well.

But who is going to give him 8 million a year? I don't think there are teams that are that far under the cap who are looking for a sg/sf.

the knicks after they blow up their roster. Or the Clippers, who can bring him back to southern cal. Shaun Livingston just came off the books, so they can give him 8 easy.

I like your core. Maybe trade one of your small forwards. Draft a center. Sign two veterans.

No draft picks, but if we can get David Andersen over that would be adding a C. Dirk isn't going anywhere. Cuban still loves him. Also, if he's peaked then I don't think it is a good time to add him to the team.

Why the knee jerk reaction? Josh Smith had a bad game, but for good parts of the series he was going toe-to-toe with KG on both ends of the floor well. And while I dislike KG's antics he is an excellent player. Marvin committed a flagrant foul, but that's no exactly a run him out of town offense.

Sleep on the team for about a week to let all the emotions ebb a bit and then look at the whole season (both the good and bad). Then start thinking about what roster moves can be made.

The Knicks are not going to eb able to ship off 50 million to expiring teams, it just isn't possible. They still have jeffries, rose, james, q-rich, and crawford all making a pretty penny that will be hard to ship off. Tjhey have Curry and Zbo who overall would cost them more to trade off then if they were to keep them (I doubt they want to part with lee and picks just to trade one of them away). The Clippers are a bit of a questionmark. I am not sure if it has been decided or not, but Maggette has a player option worth 8.4 million and Brand has one at 16.4. If they accept or they resign them to contracts, they still don't have a ton to play with. They could let both walk (stupid on there part imo).

once again, we are in a situation where we will probably lose one of our core regardless. and I would prefer to keep all of them. This is an alternative if we cannot resign one of them, and I think it is a good one. Stop talking about the future and lets start thinking now!

Marvin Williams and Josh Smith are equal in talent to Dirk and Stack, just on opposite sides of their careers. This is just an attempt to keep the current talent level at the same salary. Don't forget my trade has them eating Speedy's contract, which is a big plus.

Terrible Idea.

Dirk basically plays the same role as JJ. Dirk is more of a SF/SG than he is a PF. While this move makes Horford the permanent fixture at PF, it is terrible value for two young guys who are bout to reach their peak!

It's not Dirk's fault that the Mavericks are falling apart. It's the players around him and Avery Johnson who's now gone. Josh Howard is the biggest name on the team that could possibly be traded.

Childress gets as many (if not more) minutes here than he would anywhere else. I don't think being a "stater" means much.

I don't think the Mavs would ever trade Dirk for Smith, but I would do it for the Hawks...it basically makes us a contender in the east for 3 years.

I think Howard will be the only key Mav shopped around. They're only 1 season from a 67-win team they won't blow it up that easy.

As for the Suns, I'm sure Shaq is available, but I don't see them trading Nash or Amare, which means no interest from me.

I'm a huge fan of Smith but if Dallas was willing to do this, you'd almost have to pull the trigger.

Smith's value isn't as high as Dirk's and unfortunately Marv doesn't change that.

As HMFFL said, if the Mavs want to rebuild they should do it around Dirk. He isn't JO or something, he still has a few years of being a top 5 offensive force in the game.

Dallas wouldn't do it.
