Why do people do it?
What's so special about it.

I do this everytime I want to make a deposit or withdrawal in the middle of a game of hoops.

It's kind of like how Gilbert used to say "Hibachi" after every shot...it's a boastful proclamation of confidence that you'll make the shot...kinda like money in the bank

When someone calls "bank" when I play...it means he called the "bank" (purposely shot off backboard to get a point).....mostly for trash talking.

If u dont call bank on a backboard shot, it doesnt count in my books (except on layups) Not calling bank means u can over shoot the ball and luckily make it.

ive had this discussion many times and we seem to agree with that

Calling bank makes you more manly. In all honesty though it's pretty (Please Use More Appropriate Word) when people start making a big deal about someone not calling "bank", it's happened to me a couple of times and it's one of those things where I usually like to keep my mouth shut and see how many more times I can bank the ball in just to see everyone's reactions...

Sometimes a bank shot is just a more accurate / easier shot to hit, it always surprises me why more people don't use glass instead of chucking up one of their Antoine Walker-ish graze the net shots...

I can tell this guy hasn't played a game of basketball before, or at least played it for a month.

this thread has given me the inspiration to ask about some terms I don't know.

What is a "lay up?"

What does it mean when someone gets "fouled?"

Who are the guys on the court with the black and white stripe jerseys?

If this guy isn't foreign, then I have no idea why he is on a basketball forum to begin with. As for why people call it, its really just to prove that your shot is not a fluke, and usually should only be done during shoot arounds. During pick up games and such, it obviously is not necessary.

Hell, I don't know why people don't use bank shots more often. Depending on the angle, I always try to bank it.

This is something that always ends up with an argument between my friends and I. If you call bank, but it goes in w/o hitting the backboard - does it count?

Wow, you gotta be really bad to call glass and then not hit the backboard.
