Changes for game 3

Post#1 » by Red2 » Fri May 23, 2008 1:10 pm

right now we're getting killed by the piston guards. we controlled them pretty well in game one but last night they got out of the box and scored about 60 points. Posey is really struggling right now to guard quicker players so Posey on Hamilton or Stuckey is not a good match up for us. I would put Rondo on Hamilton and Allen on Billups to see if that slows down their guard attack. Billups is still not at full strength and he tweaked his hammie last night as far as I could see. I would also consider putting Pierce on Billups and Posey on tayshaun when Posey is in the game. I think that gives us better match ups defensively. Tony allen could be huge for us if he could guard hamilton but tony has sat for so many games that he has no rythm right now. still I'm not sure Doc has any other options. Lastly, I think Cassell needs to play against the pistons. I love eddie's fire but he can't bring the ball up against Hunter. Sam is a liability defensively but he is the biggest pg we have and he could probably school stuckey and draw some fouls. I think Doc needs to go to Sam in game 3.

When I proposed this before the first regular season Piston game the suggestion was not well received here but I still think that's the way to go.

Overall great ideas, especially like the thought of trying Rondo on Hamilton.

I like the idea of TA on Hamilton. Ray can't really stay with him through all the screens. Every time Rip runs through screens, he gets an easy catch-and-shoot opportunities.

Doc's hesistation to put Ray on Billups is justified though. Lets face it Ray is never going to be a good defense player. But you put Billups on him and you have a guy that can draw cheap fouls pretty quickly... it's a gamble but Ray also can make it very tough on Billups scoring wise, he can match his strength for positioning and he can affect his shot with the height advantage.

But Rondo on Rip is a gamble as well, Rondo can run with Rip but how many times have we already seen picks set that ended up with Rondo on the ground and out of the play for the next 3 seconds? On top of that Rip has a huge height advantage wich adds to the elusiveness he normally uses coming of screens to get free shots.

So I think it'd be fun to toy with but it's not an obviously beneficial move. Also using it just to switch up the looks players are getting in the final 6 minutes of a close game might be a good idea. Try and disrupt the rythmn of DET.

Detroit is a very smart/dirty team...When they feel threatened, they pull every trick in the book---we had two young refs last night that let them get away with these tricks...I know I counted at least 10 times when the Pistons would push off with their non dribbling arm,to make room to get a shot off....Stuckey,Billups and Hamilton did this all night long and were NEVER called on it....We have to play smarter.

bring TA in early to backup ray. ray shouldnt get more than 25 minutes a game in this series. he has been terrible getting through detroit screens and the switches we have to make to make up for it are leaving wide open shots.

You do realize, right, that Ray has been a +8 in game 2, +14 in game 1

IOW he's had the highest +/- in the series, right?

And you want his minutes down MORE?

I like the Rondo on Hamilton idea, because if we get a stop and force the same matchups at the offensive end, Rondo is very effective being guarded by Rip and Ray can shoot over Chauncey.

Besides, Rondo's not gonna stop Chauncey anyway, and the key to defending Detroit IMO is team defense (whereas IMO, against Orlando for example we are best off playing pure one on one ball). And Ray is better on the offensive end if he doesn't have to exert so much effort chasing Rip around, though Rondo can handle that fine

I also like the idea of TA on Rip just because Tony needs much more of a chance to contribute IMO. If you think he'll hurt us on the defensive end, spend 30 minutes thinking about a plan to minimize any harm on the offensive end.
