OT: My 3rd Aussie Selection

Post#1 » by TheGlyde » Tue Jun 3, 2008 12:45 am

For those who are interested, the reason for the return of my patriotic sig and avatar, is because I've been named on the Australian Track & Field team to compete at the 2008 Oceania Championships held in the Northern Mariana Islands later this month.

http://www.athletics.com.au/fanzone/380 ... in_oceania
(I'm Jay Stone, listed in the Open Men, in the 200m, 400m and Long Jump)

This is my 3rd selection to this team, where I competed in 2004 and then won a silver medal in the Long Jump at the 2006 games.

The championships pit the 19 Oceania nations against one another, with Australia and New Zealand sending developmental teams, while the other 17 nations (Fiji, Vanuatu, Paupua New Guniea, Samoa, Guam etc) send their Olympians, who will be using the meet as a warm up to the Beijing Olympics.

The Northern Mariana Islands, are situated in tha pacific between Japan and Papua New Guniea:

The largest island is just 20km long and 9km wide, so it should be a great place to visit while competing

Anyway, I know it wont be of interest to all of you, but I was excited to be named on the team again because they made the selection criteria tougher this time around, so I thought I'd share a bit of my excitement with you guys.

If you win, scream out "Glyde ftw!" right as you cross the finish line.
11/18/2017 - I have officially disowned Nikola Vucevic and branded him a loser.

- Skal Labissiere was my guy in 2016 pre-trade. Whoops, but I still believe.
- Malik Monk was my guy in 2017. Whoops(?)
- Mo Bamba was my guy in 2018. TBD.

I didn't compete at the Olympic trials this year, after the State championships I had an achillies injury and I couldn't compete.

Shirvo still races but he didn't make the team, we won;t have anyone in the 100m or 200m, which is disappointing, but we will have a strong crop of runners in the 400m, John Steffensen and Joel Milburn most notably, Milburn set the track on fire this season but is inexperienced in the international arena, so he's a bit of a wild card.

Well to expand on 2004, "Competed" = was a medal favourite for the Long Jump, but broke my foot in the 400m heats, ran the final anyway, but had to withdraw from the Long Jump :(

I'm hoping to medal again but the competition will be very hot in an Olympic year... I'm in good shape tho, so we shall see how it goes.

Thanks all for the kind wishes, I fly out in 18 days.
