Manager John Gibbons conceded it had been a "real tough" move, given that Halladay was "pitching his butt off" as per usual.
But even Halladay said it was a smart one. Fact is, bringing on Scott Downs to deal with left-hand swinging masher David Ortiz turned out brilliantly. One on and one out, Downs fanned his man when the big guy couldn't lay off a wicked hook.

"It's tough," Halladay admitted of his spectator role.
"I really felt like it was the right move. Obviously you want to be out there, but you want to do what's best for the team. Having Downs face the tying run was a smart move."
He said it, but after years of watching Halladay with the media, this guy is always saying the politically correct thing.
"No, I was not out of gas, but that's not really the factor," Halladay said, unconvincingly.

C At the plate: The Jays managed eight hits -- their largest hit total in their past four games -- but failed to tack on add-on runs in the sixth and eighth.
A Starter: Roy Halladay came up with another quality start holding Boston to two runs on six hits over 71/3 innings.
D Bullpen: Shawn Marcum first blew the save in the ninth and then was saddled with the loss in the ninth.

"I thought he pitched great and gave us just what we needed," Gibbons said of Halladay. "We got Ortiz but the problem was we didn't get Ramirez. It never fails in this ballpark. It's never a single or a double, it's a home run. It never fails in this damn park. The ball flies."
He added it's never easy pulling Halladay.
"It's real tough," Gibbons said. "But he pitched his butt off."
Halladay, who received a no-decision, backed his manager's decision.
"It's tough (to sit and watch)," Halladay said. "But I really felt like it was the right move, I really do. Downs has always been pretty good against Ortiz.

"Four weeks is a lot better than a year," Ryan said. "It's tough because I've never been in this situation before, but it's something that you're going to have to deal with throughout our career. So you have to be professional about it. You get the news and you get ready and put the work in, get healthy and help the team."

Bullpen collapse proves costly for Jays

Thomas, who was in an awful 4-for-31 slump during the first nine games of the home stand, drilled a home run to open the inning off a 2-1 fastball from Boston starter Julian Tavarez that flew into the seats beyond centre field.
For Thomas, it was his second home run of the season, the first since he hit a grand slam on April 7 against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Thomas now sits at 489 home runs for his career.
Jays' Ryan tries to stay positive

For B.J. Ryan, it was the uncertainty of it all, not knowing exactly what was wrong with his suddenly aching left pitching elbow which caused him the most grief.
"You know something's wrong down there and you're almost kind of in a daze because you don't know what it [the future] holds," the hefty Toronto closer said Thursday morning during his first interview since the Blue Jays placed him on the disabled list with a left elbow strain.

Seemingly en route to victory behind another gem from ace Roy Halladay, their bullpen disintegrated with four outs left in a painful 5-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Manny Ramirez ripped a two-run homer off Shaun Marcum in the eighth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit before Alex Cora tripled home the go-ahead run off interim closer Jason Frasor in the ninth before a crowd of 33,297.
So rather than departing for a seven-game road trip to Baltimore, Boston and New York on a high, the Blue Jays (8-7) were left licking their wounds after dropping two of three with the Red Sox (9-5) to cap a 5-5 homestand.
