Rios blast caps Jays' late rally
By Allan Ryan
And, oh yes, Rios's pinch-single in the eighth that led to the tying run; a season-high, mostly solid seven innings from Shaun Marcum; a shutout two innings from Casey Janssen for the win; a one-hit 10th from Jeremy Accardo for his fifth save in five chances; three double plays; a Matt Stairs solo in the second; plus a game-saving throw to the plate in the eighth by Stairs again.

O's blame it on Rios

Stairs was a big part of that battle, gunning down Melvin Mora at the plate from left field to end the Baltimore eighth and prevent what would have been the winning run from scoring in a 4-4 tie. Stairs was deep to prevent any doubles and had a long run to try to catch Nick Markakis' medium flyball.
"It seemed like I was running for four or five minutes," Stairs said. "I didn't make the catch but when I finally got the ball, I knew I just had to keep the throw on line and I had a good chance to get (Mora)."
Waiting on the big bats

Only one hitter, Matt Stairs, is hitting over .300. As a result, the team is in the bottom third of the rankings in just about every meaningful offensive category.
The Jays, 9-5 against lefthanded starters and 11-20 against righthanded starters, are a predominantly righthanded hitting club in a league that features predominantly righthanded pitchers. As a result, only two teams, Detroit and Seattle, have better winning percentages against lefthanded starters, but that accounts for only 14 of their 45 games heading into last night.

Toronto batters come to pitchers' aid

"The starters have definitely stepped it up," Casey Janssen said after Alex Rios's 10th home run of the year in the 10th inning lifted the Blue Jays to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles. "They're allowing us to keep the bullpen fresh, and letting Gibby [manager John Gibbons] get some matchups later in the game."
The win, in the rubber match of a three-game series played in front of 15,182 fans at Camden Yards, evened the Blue Jays' record at 3-3 on this nine-game trip that will continue today with the first of three games at the Metrodome against the Minnesota Twins.

Rios swats solo homer in 10th to lead Blue Jays past Orioles 5-4
By David Ginsburg
Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo had already gone through four relievers before turning to Baez, simply because he had few other options.
"(Chad) Bradford was unavailable, and we were in trouble for innings at the point," Perlozzo said.
Enter Baez, who also gave up a double to Lyle Overbay before finally retiring the side.
"Hopefully, its not a devastating thing for him," Perlozzo said. "We're obviously going to have to pick and choose a little later in the game now until we get him on track."
