Separated shoulder on his throwing arm, could be a month or more, though he is trying to remain optimistic.

Coach Mike Nolan won't guess at a target return date for Smith until Thursday, when the swelling subsides in his shoulder. But similar injuries often require two to three months of rehabilitation.

Smith said he completely tore both of the ligaments that connect his shoulder blade to his collarbone. He knew he was seriously hurt as soon as he hit the ground underneath Bernard.

This has been a great start to the season. We need to stop playing ASAP before all of our young talent has serious injuries.

It said it was a second or third degree shoulder separation that requires surgery. Looks like he's done for the season.

Frank Gore has a bruised thigh...

Arnaz Battle has a sprained right knee...

Vernon Davis is still out...

Manny Lawson already gone...

what else can go wrong?
