Patriots should look at FA CB Drayton Florence

Post#1 » by campybatman » Tue Jan 22, 2008 6:28 am

With the possibility that Asante Samuel could depart for free agency in pursuit of a Nate Clements-like deal. Why not consider a solid and still young and up and coming corner back in free agent to be Drayton Florence? His price tag is the concern.

Projected cap space: $26.9 million. The Chargers have 40 players under contract through at least 2009 thanks to general manager A.J. Smith's brilliant foresight. The Chargers appear likely to allow cornerback Drayton Florence to leave via free agency with Quentin Jammer and Antonio Cromartie entrenched as starters. Florence probably raised his free-agent stock with two postseason interceptions.

Interesting.

Aside from his work in the Chargers

Drayton Florence is pretty bad. Football Outsiders' game charting numbers actually have him in the bottom 5 in the league through week 13.

Let's just say Antonio Cromartie's knack for picking off balls isn't the only reason Florence lost his starting job.

At the beginning of the season I was excited that Ellis Hobbs had finally started to play like a future replacement for Samuel but man did he fizzle down the stretch.

Here's a list of players the Patriots could lose from the secondary.

Asante Samuel
Eugene Wilson
Randall Gay
Tory James
Chad Scott

My question is does Brandon Meriweather have a future with the Patriots. I believe I'd read that Harrison said he has the worst hands of anyone on the secondary or defense. Is James Sanders better? Nevertheless, Meriweather looks like he has a ways to go before he's mentioned with recent Miami standout draftees: Ed Reed, Sean Taylor and Antrel Rolle.
