Mo's Mock Offseason

Post#1 » by Flaming Mo » Tue Feb 19, 2008 1:09 pm

(Posted this already on another site but I thought it could be interesting)

Ok, it took me a while to figure one out but I finally give it a try. It's just for fun as I would say we basically are all just dreaming but it atleast might give hints in which direction the Jets may go in the offseason. One thing is for sure, we need some major changes. I won't post for how much we sign guys or who we cut, I would say we throw out the money we have if we can get impact players for it.

Free Agency
Sean Locklear OG
Corey Williams DL

Williams is a massive, active DT who would play DE in our 3-4 defense. He might not return to Green Bay and would give our frontline a complete new look. Shaun Ellis is getting old and a terrible fit for our scheme. Locklear is a veteran guard who could also play tackle if needed. If we can't get him we should try to get one of the Colts guards (Scott, Lilja) or maybe Jacob Bell (Titans). One thing is for sure, we have to sign someone for our offensive line.

Trades
There are a few players we could look to deal. Coles looks like a goner after the recent troubles with him and Chad Pennington might also not be around much longer. The market for a veteran, solid quaterback should be there and I'm sure we could get a fourth rounder for him. In the mock offseason I will just include this deal which gives us an additional pick from a team like Minnesota, Carolina or Chicago.

Draft

Trade down with Denver, moving our 6th pick for Denver's first rounder (12th overall) and a later pick or that kind of combination. I'm not that familiar with the value and all that so I'll just leave it at "later pick". Denver would move up to take either Glenn Dorsey or Sedrick Ellis as they got serious trouble with their defensive line. We will likely receive a second or third rounder from Denver (we might have to include another pick). Now to the players we draft:

1st round: Mike Jenkins (CB, South Florida)
2nd round: Gosder Cherilus (OT, Boston College)
Denver's pick (either second or third round): Cliff Avril (OLB, Purdue)
3rd round: Andre Caldwell (WR, Florida)
4th round: Eric Young (OG, Tennessee)
5th round: Kendall Langford (DE, Hampton)
6th round: Owen Schmitt (FB, West Virginia)
7th round: Adrian Arrington (WR, Michigan)

Now many will be surprised by Jenkins as our first round pick as we have already taken a corner last year. But we did pretty with that (also in the same range as Jenkins this year). He is a defensive back just like Mangini loves them. Jenkins is physical and a great athlete. He might be the best corner in run support this year and is similar to Revis in that regard. We would have secured our top notch corner tandem for almost a decade with that pick, of course only if MJ pans out.
Cherilus might be a stretch in the second round but if he's not available there's plenty of other OL talent in the draft, for example Carl Nicks. If we get Cherilus we nab a good, solid prospect with excellent experience and size.
With Denver's second pick (which will come through a trade) we would add a pass rusher. There is plenty of talent available in the 2nd or 3rd round. I will say we get a third rounder and draft Cliff Avril. He has experience at LB and he is coming from a program that has a history of sending college DE to the NFL that become 3-4 OLB.
Andre Caldwell is an excellent, quick receiver who really never had the chance to prove himself at Florida. Young and Langford are big boys who could provide nice size on either line.
Schmitt is a solid late round pick and Adrian Arrington came along nicely in his junior year. I just liked him as a player at Michigan and that catch against Florida was just nasty.

Starting lineup

Offense:
QB Kellen Clemens
RB Thomas Jones
FB Owen Schmitt
WR Jerricho Cotchery
WR Andre Caldwell
TE Chris Baker
OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson
OG Sean Locklear
C Nick Mangold
OG Brandon Moore
OT Gosder Cherilus

Defense:
DE Kenyon Coleman
NT Dewayne Robertson
DE Corey Williams
OLB Bryan Thomas
ILB David Harris
ILB Jonathan Vilma (Hobson or Barton if Vilma is moved)
OLB Cliff Avril
CB Darrelle Revis
S Kerry Rhodes
S Abram Elam
CB Mike Jenkins

Overall comments
Now we are still left with a few issues here. We have to take into consideration though that we won't be able to solve all our problems in one offseason and some areas might be helped through developing young guys, minor trades or a smaller signing.
The biggest issue with my newly proposed starting lineup (or roster for that matter) is the glaring need for a better receiving core. We are rail thin at WR but I figured this is a risk I will take in order to restore other areas of need. We define ourselves around our strong defense and a much better rushing attack with the OL additions. Clemens is a young QB who certainly could need another security blanket but he will also see better protection next year. Maybe Coles stays, maybe we can add a veteran receiver or find another guy in the draft. I see the argument though that this is the great weakness of my offseason plan as Caldwell has to pan out. It's a risk but hey, we are a 4-12 team.
On defense we get a much better pass rush with Cliff Avril and Corey Williams. We get a little more comfortable with the scheme too and have more depth. Revis and Jenkins should give us the opportunity to play more single coverage on the outside and move Rhodes or Elam up into the box. Having two corners who can handle their business is a huge asset, even though it will likely take time with Jenkins.

So, I would be happy to receive a few comments and I would certainly be happy if the Jets could make some of the moves I thought about. We certainly need to do something.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies...

I'd like to add Crumpler to that free agency list to help out Clemens with another reliable target.

Although, I'd like to address the front 7 more by adding more depth just in case Williams doesn't pan out. Maybe add another OLB as well.

Also, I'd prefer to get Gholston than move down to get Jenkins.

Drafting Jenkins to me makes no sense, while you can have great coverage it dont mean much if you cant pressure the QB. Eventually the WR is going to get open. Also I dont think Caldwell will drop to the third rounder, other then that I have no problem with the draft.

Corey Williams I have to question if he would be effective in the 3-4, he would be in the same mold as Ellis.

My main problem with this is that we still really cant get any pressure on the QB, thats the foundation of a 3-4. I would like to see the Jets maybe go after Kendrell Bell who used to be extremely good with the Steelers.

Its not a bad mock though.

I think Avril and Williams would provide quite some pass rush. But hey, Williams and Locklear already resigned so my mock offseason is history...

Yeah but drafting Jenkins doesn't mean we can't address our pass rush with other picks or through free agency. I actually feel that there is a deeper list of pass rushers available and being good value after the first round than at the time we pick first.
