How good is Bayless gonna be?

Post#1 » by london sonic » Sun Jun 22, 2008 10:08 pm

Bayless has been penciled in for the sonics on nearly every draft board but how good is this kid going to be. Personally im not sold on him as he is a combo guard can he be a pure point we need.Seattle had a young combo guard on the roster earlier this year in delonte west and dealt him away to cleveland.I looked into wests last year at st josephs and compared his stats to bayless .See below they are nearly the same .Could we be drafting a carbon copy player at 4 that we dealt away for virtually nothing earlier in the year.I must add I have not seen much of bayless or west this year so cant comment on similarities other than their last years college stats.

J Bayless-19.7 pts.45.8% shoot.40.7% 3pt.83.9%free.4.0 assists.stls-1.0.blk 0.1

delone west- 18.9PTS.51.0% shoot.41.2% 3PT.89.2% free.4.7 assists.1.7 stls.0.2 blk

delone was a junior not a freshman

It is not fair to compare stats from the Atlantic 10 to stats of the Pac-10.

I project Bayless to be a more productive and valuable player on teams like, Miami and New York than I do with Seattle. Bayless has NBA talent and athleticism, his draft status seems to be hurt by the incredible amount of intangible mystique being heaped on Mayo and Westbrook, but he does a lot of things better than both.

If you believe anything you read at this time of year, then the reports that Seattle has locked into Bayless and would move up if needed to draft him is very interesting. The best case outlook seems to indicate that Bayless is potentially Tony Parker with a better outside shot at the same age. Presti certainly should know as well as anyone if this best case is likely. The worst case scenario is that Bayless is not capable of playing the point and too small to play the two, Presti cannot find a Ginobili or Barry type to pair up with Bayless turning him into a sixth man or worse.
