Brand/Maggette Status

Post#1 » by mkwest » Thu Jun 26, 2008 7:04 am

Elton Brand: David Falk, Brand's agent, Dunleavy and team President Andy Roeser have held discussions regarding his ability to opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent. On Wednesday, Falk said the decision will be taken to Monday's opt-out deadline.

Facing an off-season in which few teams have abundant salary-cap space, Falk said Brand's preference is to work out a new, long-term deal with the team or play out the last season of his contract, in which he is due $16.44 million.

"It's not a question that we demanded anything or negotiated anything," Falk said, adding that his good working relationship with the Clippers' front office would benefit both parties. "We've had discussions with both sides on how he can finish out his career with the Clippers. My hope has been we can make a deal with both parties. That's our goal."

Maggette said that will opt-out on Monday, but "desires" a long-term deal with the Clips. On Tuesday "The Donald" personally called up Maggette to reiterate that he wants Corey to remain on the team.

Forget Maggette....did Sterling personally call Brand?

Seriously. Maggette's had his ups and downs over the years and overall I do like him, but I'm not going to lose any sleep if he's not here next season. With Brand, there's no room for error.

I was always confident that Maggette would not just walk away from Clipper Nation with DTS so much on his jock but EB has already come up in trade talks with Miami for their #2 pick(Beasley) + Marion. I hope it's all just smoke and mirrors because no way Marion makes us a playoff team with that fugly jumpshot of his.

If Brand can be inked to an extension, then by all means go for it.

If not, I would consider the rumored 'Brand + 7' for 'Marion + 2' since that becomes 'Marion + Beasley' (in all likelihood.) The second step would be to trade Maggette, because getting Marion would mean an even great logjam at the wing. Marion may not be a great shooter, but he has many other strengths.

Kaman, Beasley, Thornton, Marion, and hopefully Livingston could be a fun running team, except for Kaman! But Kaman is a quality NBA center.

Even without the trade, Maggette is an issue since he plays the same position as Thornton. The Clippers would much rather pay Thornton his rookie-scale contract at the 3, then pay Maggette to do the same.

Both of you guys pretty much said all there is to be said on this topic. I'm done following Maggette's "I wanna be here, but I really don't, but now I really do" drama; the focus is all on EB. Don't mess it up, Baylor.

Corey would have to move over to the SG if he stayed with us because that's what he was doing all last season whenever him and AL were in the game together.

What is the consensus on where Maggette will end up? Is he going to straight up leave or look for a S&T?

Sign and trade is the most likely. New Jersey is the only team I can envision making Corey an offer now that they moved Jefferson, but Corey still doesn't fit New Jersey's youth movement so it's still unlikely. Grizzlies definitely won't make Corey an offer with Mayo and Gay now patrolling the wings there. Philly will probably try to acquire a big man with their cap space. So assuming this is true, the Clippers won't have to be in any rush to complete a S&T with no teams trying to sign him out-right.

New Jersey took on Bobby Simmon's contract in the Richard Jefferson trade so I don't think they have the cap space or roster space to add Maggette. They are still paying a ton for Vince Carter as well.

...and Simmons expires in 2010, and all signs point to Jay-Z going after LeBron.

Huston seems like the team that makes the most sense to try to get Corey. They need a third scoring option.

Utah still makes sense. They sorely need a slasher, previously signed Corey and have a few pieces that would be of actual value to us.

Washington still makes sense to me... Because the Clippers need Gilbert Arenas.

He would make a lot of sense for the Hornets, but I am not sure we have the assets to do a S&T.

If you want Maggette and have assets the Bulls would want for Hinrich, such as expirings and picks, we could work out a 3-team deal.

Cavs would love Brand, but I'm sure we wouldn't mind Maggs either. I think Varejao could be a nice player for you guys, especially with you guys needing some depth. He'd be included a long with other players in any deal but I think the Cavs would love to take back Mobley in any deal.

Is Gibson expendable?

If we could get a PG without trading Maggette, a deal involving Varejao and Pavlovic for Maggette might be interesting.

Gibson is not expendable, sorry. I think LeBron would go bonkers if we shipped him out. He loves the kid.

I think I would definitely do a AV + Sasha for Maggs.
