Re: Vince Carter vs Joe Johnson
I think this one is a toss-up, and it's difficult to rank Carter, as usual..
are we ranking Carter when he's motivated? are we ranking his talent? are we ranking his regular efforts?..
I'll take Vince BY A BIT, but simply from preference, since he's one of my dudes..difficult to rank Carter by stats from last year, since his role was significantly different post-Kidd..
when they're both healthy and motivated, I don't think either guy does anything SIGNIFICANTLY better than the other..

Well Joe's total numbers weren't special this year. He ended up only hitting 43% but fatigue played a role in that. His closing stretch was unreal - the type of impact that Carter had his first few years on the scene.
I'll take Joe today.

JJ is a nice defender and yeah, he definitely closed the season and hit the playoffs with a bang.
Better passer and defender than Carter, not as explosive a scorer as can be Vince when he decides he's going to the hole every possession, which still happens from time to time.
I think I also take JJ by a small margin.

You're comparing Vince Carter to a guy who is 4 years younger than him. I would take Vince in his prime over Joe in his prime (which is current Joe).

I think people are judging Vince based on last season, a down year. I think he will rebound, especially with Jefferson out of the picture. I'd say Vince's experience gives him the edge over Joe's athletecism, but that experience has never really turned into anything in the playoffs.
I'll take Vince until I'm sure that Joe's outperforming him next season.

Vince last season started out with a down year, but by no means ended up with one. He finished off the season strong, and he was playing great at the end of the season. He is a underrated defender, very good scorer, and as good shooter. I'll take my chances with Vince, just because he is a above average consistent player.

Vince, even a broken down Vince, is more athletic than Johnson. Probably by a considerable margin.

I'll take Carter. I'm not sold on JJ after the Hawks-Celts series. He's going to have to be good more consistently.

No offense, but that's just stupid. JJ was often TRIPLE-TEAMED vs. the Celtics. If he had any other proven talent, his numbers would go up significantly.
You also have to take attitude into this, and I think that ultimately gives JJ the edge.

Talent wise VC. Carter has the talent to be an all time great...but.
Drive wise JJ. Carter just never seems like hes playing to win anymore, and it's really a shame. Now and then you get to see the real Carter which is always fun, but too often disappointed by him.
Carter is better, but I would take JJ for my team over him.

JJ by a mile.
VC has shown he cannot lead and will not lead when given the opportunity. When diversity hits he demands a trade.
Joe was an all-star and will continue to be one moving forward.

^^ How can any non homer make that comment? Carter accomplished a hell of alot more on a less talented team (the Raptors) than JJ has ever done with the Hawks.
I've no doubt that the Hawks would have had more success with VC last season.

I'd take a prime Vince too, but prime Vince only played like prime Vince for 2 years (his first two) before injuries and a weak approach derailed him. Even still, a younger Vince was much better than JJ, yes.

I have to question the logic of someone who prefers a star player to ask their way off of a championship contender to be the #1 option on a crap team, to a star player who wants to leave a floundering franchise because he thinks he'll have a better chance of winning elsewhere.

Amen, brotha. Amen.

Re: Vince Carter vs Joe Johnson
Malinhion raises a good point.
And it's worth mentioning that Vince's only major leadership issues occurred early in his career.
1) When he wasn't able to handle the physical nature of the Knicks in his first playoff series (which he remedied the year after)
and
2) When he was a bitch about getting his diploma in-person on the day of a game 7 that ended up with him shooting 6-18 and flubbing the last shot.
OK, and
3) That whole crap with broadcasting the endgame play the Raps would run against... Seattle, I think.
Since then, his major problems have been fairly legitimate concerns about reinjuring himself, fading too much on the jumpers he takes too often... and not being Michael Jordan, which is hardly a legit criticism. He's been a 24/5/5 player for the Nets with a little help, something of which he traditionally had little while playing out the last dregs of Lenny Wilkens' Raptors coaching career and then under Kevin "Offense, wtf is that?" O'neill before playing a part of a season under Mitchell in his first year as a rookie coach. Who did we have? Jalen Rose? Donyell Marshall? Who was our point guard; our legit second scorer? The Raptors definitely flubbed building around him because Grunwald overpaid for the roleplayers that he thought would keep Vince in-town.
