Stoudamire: Will he retire a Sun?

First of all, let me say that the Suns were screwed over a couple of years ago when Horry threw Nash. The Suns should have won the title, and it would have changed the NBA in a positive way in my opinion... I'm so tired of the "superstar" debate. A win by the Suns would have shown people that team basketball can win.

In any case, the purpose of this thread is to discuss Amare Stoudamire. The Suns look like they are headed for a rebuilding stint in a couple of years. What is Amare's contract situation, and will he stick around for a couple of rebuilding years?

The max deal he will be able to sign with the Suns will far outweigh any max deal another team will be able to offer him. From a contract perspective, the Suns win.

He is also close to Sarver from a financial standpoint. Sarver has helped him to invest the money that he makes in PHX and is in a few JV's with Sarver.

Phoenix will be able to land a great FA in the 2010 market. Our cap space will be fantastic and Stoudemire will be able to help us draw good FA and RFA's to our team.

Once you put another star alongside Stoudemire in the free agency that year, he will retire a Sun.

As a league MVP.

With a ring.

there are numerous threads that have discussed this subject, but I will do my best to sum it up briefly.

Amare can opt out in the summer of 2010, but can be resigned to a 6 year deal in the summer of 2009. He has made comments in the media, about not playing for team USA, because he wants to keep his knees rested and healthy so that he can sign a max extension. I am assuming that he is going to want to sign that max deal ASAP, and if the Suns' don't do it, we will all have a field day with it. The difference between his staying and going is about $40 million as well. All strong indicators that he is here for the long term.

Retire a Sun, he is only 25. That discussion can be made in 6 or 7 years when his next contract is expiring.

I expect us to evaluate him closely this season looking for any signs of a let down post microfracture. He has had two strong seasons in a row now but the surgery is a temp fix for what will eventually be arthritis.

I think if he shows zero signs of slowing down they will try to get an extension signed a year before he becomes a free agent. I dont know if he will retire a Sun. But a player of his skill level should be here through his prime at the least.

I think it is obvious that he was talking about Salim Stoudamire. I think he is still confused though, because he also doesn't play for the Suns.

He must be clairvoyant, I guess that means Salim will be our backup PG next season, he is a FA.

You pretty much summed it all up very nicely

. I see us getting a SF or SG that year, and since LeBron is out of question and Dwayne is like to stay with the Heat, I'm guessing we are looking at gettting JJ back. I personally hate his guts, but getting him back with STAT wouldn't be bad at all. Especially if we resign SHAQ + NASH to some nice, affordable contracts as veteran backups that can keep the locker room exciting and fresh, while giving great production. I don't know about Shaq, but I can see Nash resigning with us.

ah, we are at $57 million next year before picking up Nash's contract which puts us at $70 million. That translates into us being in the same position we are now.

Amare is probably going to sign a max extension, or opt out and then sign a max contract with the Suns. But that's virtually irrelevant as to whether he'll retire a Sun or not. He's much more likely to leave the Suns via trade than free agency. It's tough to have any confidence on whether he'll retire as a Sun at this point, because if he gets traded, it's probably not until he's at least 30.

Lol always good to see we're getting Lakerboys nervous. Amare or not, our most valuable asset is Shaq for insurance since Kobe can't win without him.
