What's the max contract Bynum can get?

Post#1 » by wfiles » Sun Aug 3, 2008 10:48 pm

How much can Bynum get from the Lakers or from another team? Someone on the Portland board said they can screw the Lakers if Portland offered Bynum $20 million per year and have the Lakers match. Is this possible? It would only be Bynum's 5th year so how can he make that much of the salary cap?

Thats bull. Lakers can offer him the most. The CBA is set up to give the team the player plays for an advantage over the other teams. To my understanding. I think he can sign a 5yr 80mil deal.

obviously they don't know anything about restrictions on player's salaries.

This was/is already being discussed in Mitch v. Lee thread and there was a portland fan who thought the same thing.
I just hope they go read up on the CBA and salary restrictions before they continue to post such false information.

His first year salary max (max he can get in the first year of his new contract) is around 14 mil (iirc), he can get a max of 10.5% raises per year, non-compounded.

Well, they could offer a front loaded contract with options on the end.

I'm not sure exactly how much they can offer Bynum, but I do know that they can offer Bynum a front loaded contract at say 18-20 million, with a player option on year 4 or 5, meaning Bynum would make more money in the end.

maybe portland fans are just trying to get under your skin, to cover their own insecurities about their own young center

Regardless, I think it is quite clear that Bynum will likely be asking for the absolute max (70 mil?) with the money Deng/Iggy/Okafor/Biedrins is getting.

Either that, or he completely flops this year, but if he is half as good as some Laker fan's claiming (number 2 best center behind Dwight, or even better than Dwight by some), Bynum will be getting 70 mil without any question.

Based on this years cap numbers the max contract extension that he could sign this summer would be 5 years $83,235,900. Assuming the Lakers do not extend him this summer, which I think is likely, next year the max he could get from another team (based on this year's cap) would be 5 years $79,796,400. Meanwhile the max that the Lakers could offer him is 6 years $104,216,850.
