What can you tell me about Gibson?

Post#1 » by bryant08 » Wed Aug 6, 2008 2:13 pm

Hey guys,

I was wondering what you could tell me about Daniel Gibson. I've got a few questions in particular, which I'd love to know the answer to (I acquired him in the GM a Team game and he is currently my starting PG):

- Is he a natural one?
- Is he a reliable starter?
- How good is his ball-handling ability?
- What are his strengths/weaknesses on defense?
- How good is his slashing ability?
- I know he came up big in the playoffs, can he be counted on as a clutch performer?
- How would he work with my team specifically (starting lineup of: Kaman/Bosh/Posey/Jefferson/Gibson) both offensively and defensively?'

Any answers would be much appreciated.

Can't play more than spot minutes at PG.

SG in a PG body. Not a natural pg. He's undersized and will take hits so injuries are a little bit of a concern. Not good ball handling. defense- undersized but tries hard. your lineup has no ball handlers- at all..

His role is best reserved as a spark off the bench as a spot up shooter.

With that lineup, you might want to start him at SG and Jefferson at SF and another PG at PG but i don't know who you have as a backup.

The biggest problem with Gibson is that he's not that good of a ball handler. Sure he's not a natural point guard, but he's serviceable in that capacity. But playing him big minutes where he's the primary ball handler is a recipe for disaster. From what I've read, he's devoted this offseason to working on his ball handling. We can only hope that improves. That being said, he's actually very quick and can beat his man fairly regularly (provided he doesn't lose the ball).

I have Nate Robinson (another 2 in a one's body) and Carlos Arroyo off the bench. Should I try and focus on moving Boobie to the bench?

I'd put Gibson on the bench just because I don't think he's going to get as much run as Nate Robinson. He can put up good numbers, but he's never going to put up the assists that you'd want and he's not really a scorer per se, he can score, but at times he's a bit reluctant to shoot it seems.

Asking for help on the gm a team game... Naughty, naughty. ;)

Anyway, Boobie isn't a PG. No way.

I don't know about the Real GM game or fantasy basketball so my answers are only with respect to reality.

- Is he a natural one?

no, not even close thus far early in his career

- Is he a reliable starter?

He is worthy of being a NBA starter on a team who is very weak at PG. On most teams he's a bench player. Gibson has proven to be nothing more than a great set shooter thus far in his career. That could change of course, but he hasn't proven more than that right now.

He is a surprisingly consistent player for being just a shooter. He's very efficient also and has potential to get better. If you start him he most likely won't be a great player for you, but he will be consistent. He will knock down 2-3 three pointers per game. He has incredibly solid shot selection for such a young player.

He will get consistent minutes with the Cavs whether he comes off the bench or starts.

- How good is his ball-handling ability?

Not very good, he can't advance the ball under pressure well. He can't get where he wants to on the court, he struggles at getting his team into their sets the few times he even attempts to do so. He has no left hand. He is horrible at the pick and roll with the ball. If the defense hedges Gibson goes wherever his defender wants him to which is usually further away from the basket and further away from LeBron. Don't expect many assists from him.

- What are his strengths/weaknesses on defense?

His lack of size and strength are his biggest weaknesses on defense. His biggest strength is having quick hands. Not really quick hands like Hughes when he was on Washington, but more-so sneaky at deflecting a ball or pass sporadically. He's not a standout defender, but gives all his effort.

- How good is his slashing ability?

Not very good, he can show flashes here and there, but he's not a consistent slasher. Most of his shots come from open 3 pointers which LeBron or every once in a while someone else creates.

- I know he came up big in the playoffs, can he be counted on as a clutch performer?

He's already one of the most clutch sharpshooters in the NBA. If I needed someone to hit a last second wide open set 3 pointer he'd be the #1 guy I'd choose over anyone in the NBA.
much respect to the 2011-2012 champions, Miami Heat, well deserved

Gibson projects to be pretty good, but he's at least 2-3 years down the road from reaching his potential. He's quick enough to take advantage of the hand check rules that let speedsters like Tony Parker and Dwayne Wade into the lane so easily, but his ballhandling isn't starter quality, and he still needs to learn the nuances of playing defense, because he's physically capable of locking down his man.
